Acute Detoxification and Acute Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment
As a first step on the road to healing addiction, many people require acute medically managed detoxification from substances in a safe and confidential setting. Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital provides acute detoxification from all substances using state-of-the-art clinical practice delivered by experts in the treatment of addiction. Many of these same patients will also require acute stabilization of co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatric physicians, nurses, social workers, and mental health technicians provide personalized clinical care aimed at treating addiction and the related medical and psychiatric disorders often associated with substance use. Plans for continued treatment in outpatient or residential programs are jointly formulated with patients, families and treatment teams to ensure the highest measure of success upon discharge. Outpatient Clinics
The outpatient clinic is staffed by psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners who are specialists in the treatment of addiction and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Patients whose addiction care is not emergent can receive an evaluation for their addiction and also recommendations for management as either outpatients or inpatients. Many of the patients who were initially evaluated as inpatients can be followed in the VBH Addiction Psychiatry Clinics.
Expanding VUMC’s ability to better serve patients with SUD, specifically those struggling with OUD, Vanderbilt Behavioral Health has contracted with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) to serve as a treatment hub for OUD in Middle Tennessee. This contract has provided funding for hiring of additional recovery support staff (social workers, case managers, recovery coaches) and will allow for provision of MAT to uninsured patients. Vanderbilt will partner with a network of treatment “spokes” across Middle Tennessee to provide comprehensive recovery care services to patients with OUD.
VUH Addiction Consultation Liaison Service
The Vanderbilt University Hospital Addiction Consultation-Liaison Service seeks to improve the care of patients with substance use disorders across VUH and to advise other services on the management of patients with complex addiction issues. Patients admitted to the general hospital (VUH) with complex addiction issues often have medical sequelae of their substance use problems that require multidisciplinary intervention. We work collaboratively with inpatient and outpatient providers across VUMC to provide value-based care for the chronic medical illnesses so that patients are treated with respect and compassion, and so that they can complete successful transitions to outpatient care.

VUMC Bridge Clinic
The VUMC Bridge Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic bringing together expert faculty in Addiction Medicine/Psychiatry, Internal Medicine/Primary Care, Infectious Diseases, and Chronic Pain-Anesthesia to offer post-acute care for patients seen in the VUMC Emergency Department (ED) or inpatient hospital setting for a period of up to three months following discharge. Our team also includes a social worker, nurse case manager and recovery coach. An important component of the mission of the Bridge Clinic is to establish strong community relationships through Middle Tennessee that facilitate the safe transition of patients into long term outpatient MAT follow-up and medical care at the conclusion of the Bridge Clinic period of care.
Special Populations
Our division has partnerships with other specialty clinics at VUMC including the Vanderbilt Maternal Addiction Recovery Program within the Vanderbilt Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Vanderbilt Division of Pain-Anesthesia, and the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Center (VCCC) treating patients with HIV/AIDS.
