Psychiatry Residency
The Vanderbilt Psychiatry Residency program is an ACGME accredited four-year residency that was founded in 1947. The program offers an opportunity for residents to receive training in general psychiatry and to begin a career balanced with clinical and academic possibilities. As one of the leading centers in the nation for medical education, advanced patient care and biomedical research, Vanderbilt has a long tradition of preparing physicians for careers in psychiatry.
The program offers a general track, child and adolescent psychiatry fast track and a research track. It has a developing educational focus on integrating neuroscience and evolutionary psychiatry in our formulation and clinical reasoning. Research and academic leadership and teaching are major areas of growing emphasis for our residency.
Clinical training is broadly diversified with many elective opportunities to permit residents to explore their interests. Training sites include inpatient, outpatient, general hospital, community and homeless psychiatry settings. The department has a broad range of research opportunities for residents who work closely with an extremely collaborative faculty. Our program is a highly collegial program that seeks academically accomplished, mature and compassionate residents.

Clinical training takes place at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and the Nashville Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
