Post Graduate Year 3 (PGY3)

In the third year all residents provide psychiatric assessments and longitudinal treatment in outpatient settings. Residents have clinics at both the Nashville VA and The Vanderbilt Behavioral Health Clinic. Residents see patients in specialized clinics for psychotic disorders, geriatrics, mood disorders, and addictions.  Two half-days per week are reserved for individual and/or group psychotherapy. For residents interested in an academic career, there is flexibility to allow for an elective devoted to participating in ongoing research in the department or in working on their own research/clinical interests. Residents can also volunteer to work with medical students at the Shade Tree Clinic, a free clinic organized by Vanderbilt medical students to provide primary care and psychiatric services to the underserved.

Call Schedule:

PGY3s take call at VPH from 5-9 pm on weekdays and 9 am - 9 pm on weekends to assist with supervision of PGY1s and PGY2s. On average, PGY3s will take 17 weekday calls and 12 weekend call days a year.

PGY3s will also begin taking outpatient home call, during which they are responsible for managing any urgent or emergent calls that come in overnight from the patients seen in the Vanderbilt Behavioral Health Clinic. This call happens in 1 week blocks and occurs 4 times a year. Call varies but typically residents average about 1 call every few nights that can be answered from home. There are no more overnight rotations after the PGY 2 year.

Didactics:

In addition to the ongoing seminar series, PGY3 residents participate in ongoing case conferences in psychotherapy and faculty led case discussions.
