Research Security Training

Safeguarding investigators and critical research is more important than ever. Some federal funding agencies are already requiring all senior/key personnel to complete research security training, in accordance with the CHIPS and Science Act (P.L. 117-167). Additionally, NIH recently reminded the research community that proper disclosures play an important role in research security and integrity (NOT-OD-25-133).

We have partnered with CITI to make research security training available to the entire Vanderbilt research community. All VUMC principal investigators should complete the “Research Security for VUMC Faculty and Staff” training in CITI by January 15, 2026.

Some federal agencies or prime institutions may require senior/key personnel to complete the training for grant submissions prior to January 15; please follow sponsor instructions. The Office of Sponsored Programs will receive CITI reports and certify training completion to sponsors. The sponsor may also ask key personnel to individually certify their training completion.

While the “Research Security for VUMC Faculty and Staff” module should be used to fulfill the VUMC training requirement, additional CITI research security training modules are also available. All courses are free to investigators.

Training Requirement

All VUMC principal investigators should complete the training by Jan. 15, or before serving as senior/key personnel on a federal grant submission that requires it, whichever comes first.
