Research Security Training

Safeguarding investigators and critical research is more important than ever. Many federal funding agencies require all senior/key personnel to complete research security training, in accordance with the CHIPS and Science Act (P.L. 117-167). Additionally, NIH recently reminded the research community that proper disclosures play an important role in research security and integrity (NOT-OD-25-133).

We have partnered with CITI to make research security training available to the entire Vanderbilt research community. All VUMC principal investigators, postdocs, and senior/key personnel should complete the CITI module "Research Security for VUMC Faculty and Staff" by January 15 annually. Course content is based on the NSF SECURE Center CTM .

The Office of Sponsored Programs will receive CITI reports and certify training completion to sponsors. The sponsor may also ask key personnel to individually certify their training completion. The Office of Sponsored Programs will not submit applications or RPPRs until all VUMC project KPs have completed training.

Accessing the Training

  • Use the Office of Research guide here for detailed instructions on accessing the “Research Security for VUMC Faculty and Staff” course in CITI. Note that the training will not automatically appear in your course list.
  • Log in directly through CITI. The Vanderbilt University single sign-on may not work for VUMC employees.
  • Link your ORCID ID as shown on slide 6 for your course completion to be automatically reported to the Office of Sponsored Programs.
  • Complete the course titled “Research Security for VUMC Faculty and Staff”. Only this course fulfills the VUMC training requirement.
