Dr. Ardila joined our surgical faculty in the Division of General Surgery after completing a fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook, NY. Dr. Ardila’s clinical interests and specialties include bariatric and metabolic surgery, as well as minimally invasive foregut surgery. Other areas of expertise include gastrointestinal surgery, gastroesophageal reflux disease, biliary disease, surgical endoscopy, and general surgery.

Research

Dr. Ardila’s current research interests focuses on bariatric and metabolic surgery outcomes and optimizing enhanced recovery pathways in bariatric patients. Dr. Ardila’s recent publications include: Bone Mineral Density Changes after Bariatric Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy; Bariatric Surgery in Patients with Interstitial Lung Disease, Surgical Endoscopy; A Nationwide Safety Analysis of Discharge on the First Postoperative Day after Bariatric Surgery in Selected Patients, Obesity Surgery.

Dr. Ardila is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgery. She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Ardila received her medical degree graduating magna cum laude at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas, Venezuela (Magna Cum Laude). She then completed her General Surgery internship and residency at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH and a fellowship in Advanced GI, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook, NY.

Dr. Khan joined our surgical faculty in the Division of General Surgery after completing a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX. His surgical focus and interests include colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, robotic surgery, complicated diverticulitis, and carcinoids. He has extensive training in minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques. Dr. Khan is a certified member of American Board of Surgery, General Surgery, and board eligible for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Research

Dr. Khan’s research interests include computer vision analysis of surgical videos for automated identification of operative steps and structures during robotic surgery. Additionally, he is also interested in development of image-guided precision tools for minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery. He has multiple publications in peer reviewed scientific and clinical journals including Journal of Surgical Research, Colorectal Disease, and International Journal of Surgery. He has also co-authored multiple chapters and online modules on minimally invasive techniques in surgery.

Dr. Khan is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract. Additionally, he holds membership in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and Association of Academic Surgeons. Dr. Khan is the recipient of the Robert G. Somers Award for outstanding resident educator in general surgery, Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA. He also received the American College of Surgeons Traveling Scholarship, Leadership and Advocacy Summit, Washington, D.C. multiple times.

Dr. Khan earned his MD and graduated from Aga Khan University School of Medicine, Karachi, Pakistan with honors in surgery and completed his Internship at University of Florida Medical Center, Gainesville, FL. Dr. Khan served his residency in General Surgery at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA, and fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX. He also completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center, Birmingham, AL.

Dr. Deepa Magge joined our surgical faculty in the Division of Surgical Oncology & Endocrine Surgery as an assistant professor of Surgery after she served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY. She served as the Associate Program Director of the complex general surgical oncology fellowship and focused much of her time on teaching residents and fellows. She was presented the Resident Teaching Award during her tenure at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Magge’s specific areas of clinical interest include gastrointestinal (GI) surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal carcinomatosis, as well as other soft tissue malignancies. She is well-versed in minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, to treat most benign and malignant conditions and complex GI surgical oncology cases.  

Research
During Dr. Magge’s  residency at UPMC she performed 2 years of basic science and translational research, focusing on oncolytic viral therapy modulation, and was presented the Resident Research Award. Dr. Magge also completed numerous clinical research studies describing regional therapies, including Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for carcinomatosis secondary to multiple GI malignancies, as well as Isolated Hepatic Perfusion for unresectable liver metastases. She has over 20 first or last author publications as well as many other publications as collaborating author in peer-reviewed scientific and clinical journals. In addition, she has presented her research findings nationally. 

Memberships
Dr. Magge is currently board certified in General Surgery as well as Complex General Surgical Oncology. She will serve as a committee member for the Advanced Cancer Therapies Conference offered by the Society of Surgical Oncology, beginning her 2-year commitment this fall.

Education
Dr. Magge earned her bachelor degree with summa cum laude distinction in 2004 and medical degree with cum laude and AOA designation in 2008 from Boston University where she was part of their seven-year medical program. She was awarded the Anne and David Mishel Cancer Research Award for her early interests in oncologic care.

Dr. Magge completed her General Surgery residency at UPMC, there she also completed a fellowship in Complex Surgical Oncology, during which she served as Administrative Chief Fellow.

Dr. Bick joined our surgical faculty in the Department of Neurological Surgery after completing a residency and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston MA. Dr. Bick’s clinical interests include epilepsy, deep brain stimulation, movement disorders, essential tremor, psychiatric neurosurgery, and trigeminal neuralgia.

Research
Dr. Bick’s research focuses on uncovering neurophysiological signaling that underlies cognitive and emotional processes using intracranial recordings from human subjects. She studies the signals underlying memory and other cognitive processes. Better understanding of the neurophysiology of these processes allows for the development of new neuromodulation techniques for memory and psychiatric disorders. Her recent publications include: Vagus Nerve Stimulation Versus Responsive Neurostimulator System in Patients with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery; Caudate Stimulation Enhances Learning, Brain, A Journal Of Neurology; Preoperative MRI Findings Predict Diagnostic Utility of Foramen Ovale Electrodes, Journal of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Streams research interests include resuscitation and trauma clinical outcomes, as well as risk factors for the development of post-trauma stress disorder. Her recent publications include: Management of Post-Operative Pulmonary Complications After Trauma Pneumonectomy, Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia;  Necrotizing Lung Infections, Thoracic Surgery for the Acute Care Surgeon; and Motor Vehicle Collision-Related Injuries in the Elderly, Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.

Dr. Mubang joined our surgical faculty as an assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care after having completed his fellowships in Acute Care Surgery and Burn Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. His clinical areas of expertise include acute and reconstructive burns; burns and emergency treatment; trauma and critical care; emergency general surgery; and complex skin and soft tissue injury.

Research
Dr. Mubang’s current research focuses on burn surgery and lipid peroxidation, burn shock, and burn wound conversions necessitating surgery; muscle wasting in traumatic brain injury patients with the help of metabolomics; and smoking on home oxygen and burn related injuries. Prior research focused on traumatic brain injury and prognostication tools looking at computer tomography of the head to correlate with morbidity and mortality. Dr. Mubang also researched foreign objects during surgery by doing a systematic review and meta analysis of retained surgical items and blood product resuscitation in trauma.

Dr. Mubang is co-investigator on a grant to investigate the role of inflammatory markers in burn patients and novel therapeutic approaches to halt inflammation for the Division of Trauma and Burn Surgery at VUMC.

Dr. Deyholos’ previous research interests have included novel endovascular and hybrid approaches for treatment of aortic aneurysms and aortoiliac occlusive disease. Research
Dr. Dewan’s research focuses on clinical and translational neuro-oncology targeted treatments and outcomes, pediatric neurovascular disorders and surgical therapy, global epidemiology and treatment of neurosurgical disease, neurosurgical capacity building in low resource settings, and the surgical management of congenital neurologic disorders. He has published more than 130 manuscripts in some of the top content journals including Neuro-Oncology, the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, and the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. His research has garnered more than 9,000 citations worldwide.

Dr. Michael Dewan is Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery and is board-certified by both the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery. He completed his residency in Neurological Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. Before returning to Nashville to join as Faculty, he served as Global Neurosurgery Fellow at Boston Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA and as Pediatric Neurosurgery Chief Fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Dewan’s clinical interests include brain and spinal tumors, vascular neurosurgery, and congenital neurosurgery.

Dr. Menzel joined our surgical faculty in the Division of General Surgery as an assistant professor of Clinical Surgery after completing a fellowship in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His clinical areas of expertise are bariatric and metabolic surgery, as well as minimally invasive foregut surgery. Other areas of expertise include GI surgery, gastroesophageal reflux disease, biliary disease, and general surgery. Dr. Menzel will be focusing his efforts on the development of Vanderbilt’s Surgical Weight Loss/Bariatric Program at Vanderbilt’s Wilson County Hospital. 

Research

Dr. Menzel’s research interests include optimizing enhanced recovery pathways in bariatric patients, studying patient outcomes after staged bariatric revision operations, and the professionalism of medicine. His recent publications include: Comparing Sleeve Gastrectomy to Single Stage Band Removal and Concomitant Sleeve Gastrectomy, International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders. He is also co-authoring a book chapter on the metabolic changes after roux-en-y gastric bypass.
