Our Research Mission and Vision

The Division of Surgical Research (DSR) is committed to provide our surgeon-scientist and researchers the resources to engage in and advance the frontiers of scientific biomedical research for the benefit of improving and preserving the health and healing of the citizens on a global scale.

We offer:

  • Enhance researchers’ abilities to obtain and manage grants
  • Encourage invention, innovation and novel techniques and devices
  • Partner with the research community to create a culture of high achievement
  • Promote shared responsibility, the ethical conduct of research, and compliance
  • Strategically invests in promising research and researchers
  • Creates integrated services, access to research administration and infrastructure
  • Broaden awareness of the value of surgical research
  • Develop strong relationships with sponsors
  • Enhance the ability to perform research in a global community
  • Supports strong infrastructure for interdisciplinary research
  • Foster collaboration and interdisciplinary research activities
  • Improve the quality of education and technical training in the sciences

The DSR is dedicated to the pursuit of the full spectrum of biomedical research by faculty, fellows, residents and students. Our  faculty and resident members have consistently achieved impressive NIH and DOD funding levels in the top ten percentile for surgery programs nationwide.

The DSR in the Section of Surgical Sciences is the primary research resource for all Section departments and divisions. It provides vital facilities and services for conducting the research programs of its investigators. It also plays an integral role in training research fellows.

Diverse research opportunities are available to individuals seeking careers in academic surgery. Most surgical residents spend a two-year research fellowship working with established surgical faculty investigators. Residents pursue research spanning the full range of investigation from basic science to translational investigations, and clinical and outcomes-based research.
