Grant Rigney, MD was born and raised in Tullahoma, Tenn. Grant attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he received a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular engineering. After graduating summa cum laude, he began two years of study at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, where he obtained a master’s degree in evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation and a second master’s degree in clinical and therapeutic neuroscience. His research there focused on traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s disease, health policy and epilepsy. He subsequently moved to Boston to attend Harvard Medical School. Grant published over 20 academic research papers focused on sport-related concussion, TBI, hospital quality improvement and spinal oncology. During this time, he also published over 20 articles and op-eds on various health policy topics.

After graduating from Harvard in 2025, Grant moved to Nashville to start his neurosurgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Grant is an avid Tennessee football fan and enjoys running, playing music, and spending time with his family and friends. He is married to Julia and has one daughter, Frances.
