Dr. Kelly joined our surgical faculty in the Department of Neurological Surgery as Assistant Professor after completing a fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology and Skull Base Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Kelly’s research will focus on patient-reported outcomes, peri-operative management, and clinical outcomes for patients with brain and skull base tumors.

Research
Dr. Kelly has published on a range of topics including skull base disorders, patient-reported outcomes, residency training, surgical ethics, and history of medicine. Among his primary clinical research interests are pituitary lesions, malignant brain tumors, acoustic neuromas, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Included among his recent publications in peer-reviewed journals are: Conditional vasospasm-free survival following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, Neurocritical Care, 2022; Neurologic exam frequency and time-to-delirium following traumatic brain injury, Neurosurgery 2023. Additional publications include: Data-driven residency training: A systematic review of evidence-based initiatives for neurosurgery programs, Neurosurgery, 2021; and Arnold Max Meirowsky: Champion of the American Mobile Neurosurgical Unit during the Korean War, Neurosurgical Focus 2022.

Memberships, Awards and Honors
Dr. Kelly is board-eligible in Neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He received the 2022 Teaching and Leadership Award from the Department of Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the 2019 Voland Neuro-oncology Research Award from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Education
Dr. Kelly earned a dual Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. He received his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN. He completed his neurosurgical residency and a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) degree Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This was followed by a neurosurgical oncology and skull base surgery fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.
