Adrian Barbul, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Barbul joins our surgical faculty as Professor in the Division of General Surgery after serving as Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD and Medical Director of Operating Rooms/Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery, Medstar Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.
His clinical areas of interest include surgical procedures involving the GI tract, hernia repair, complex wounds, surgical nutrition and a broad range of other general surgical procedures. Dr. Barbul is currently expanding a specialty treatment program for patients with gastroparesis, a growing population of chronically ill patients who have unique gastric/digestive conditions due to diabetes, and other health issues.
Dr. Barbul is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
For his contributions to wound healing, he has been presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Wound Healing Society of America.
RESEARCH and EDUCATION
Dr. Barbuls research is focused on surgical nutrition, amino acid metabolism and research pertaining to the treatment of wound healing. He has most recently published articles including, Effect of a Specialized Amino Acid Mixture on Human Collagen Deposition, Annals of Surgery, the Role of Nitric Oxide in Repair Processes, American Journal of Surgery, and Excessive Nitric Oxide Impairs Wound Collagen Accumulation, Journal of Surgical Research.
Dr. Barbul received his undergraduate degree from City College of New York, New York, NY and his medical degree from the School of General Medicine, Bucharest, Romania.
Colleen Kiernan, MD, MPH, FACS
Dr. Kiernan joins our surgical faculty after completing her fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. Her clinical areas of expertise include endocrine disorders of the adrenal glands, thyroid disease and thyroid cancer, parathyroid, neuroendocrine surgery, and GI surgery. Dr. Kiernan is certified by the American Board of Surgery General Surgery.
Research
Dr. Kiernan’s research interests are in adrenal cortical carcinoma, thyroid cancer, and data quality and quality improvement. Her recently published articles include: Features of Synchronous Versus Metachronous Metastasectomy in Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma: Analysis from the US Adrenocortical Carcinoma Database, Surgery; Bilateral Neck Exploration for Sporadic Primary Hyperparathyroidism, Journal of the American College of Surgeons; and New Terminology-Noninvasive Follicular Neoplasm with Papillary-Like Nuclear Features and its Effect on the Rate of Malignancy at a Single Institution, Surgery.

Dr. Kiernan received the Harwell Wilson Award for Surgical Excellence from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN; the Clinical Excellence Award from the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX: and the Excellence in Patient Care Award from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. Dr. Kiernan is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Gold Humanism Honor Society, the American College of Surgeons, and the Association of Academic Surgeons.
Education
Dr. Kiernan received her Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, and her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN. She completed her internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN and a fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX.

J. Bradford Hill, MD
Clinical Interests
Dr. Hill is a comprehensive hand and upper extremity surgeon who treats most conditions from below the shoulder to the finger tips. His areas of expertise include fractures, trauma, arthritis, tendon injuries, sports and repetitive motion injuries of hand and wrist, as well as finger and limb reattachment, salvage and preservation.
Dr. Hill offers minimally invasive approaches for common conditions, such as targeted denervation for arthritis, endoscopic carpal tunnel release surgery and joint arthroscopy, preferring his patients to have shorter recovery and return to work or activity.
Professional Involvement
Dr. Hill is active among university-wide teams for trauma and limb reconstruction. He is a champion for patients with trauma, limb loss or other devastating injuries of the arm or leg. He has a particular interest in the care of musicians and performing artists.
Research
Dr. Hill’s research interests are primarily related to advancing patient care and outcomes within hand surgery, trauma and reconstructive microsurgery. His work has generated dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and presentations at national meetings.
Education
Dr. Hill received his undergraduate education at the University of Florida, where he graduated as Valedictorian. He graduated from medical school at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He then completed a combined residency in General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at New York University, followed by an Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Curtis National Hand Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery with a subspecialty certification in Surgery of the Hand.

Michael C. Smith, MD
Dr. Smith joined our surgical faculty after having served as a fellow at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. He is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care Surgery. His clinical areas of expertise include trauma, emergency general surgery, surgical critical care, and hernias.
Research
Dr. Smith’s research interests include outcomes in trauma and emergency general surgery and the development and optimization of trauma systems. His recent publications include Temporal Factors Drive Motorcycle Collision-Related Trauma, American Surgeon; Can the Laparoscopic Approach Be Employed in Octogenarians? Journal of Surgical Research; and Identifying Temporal Patterns in Trauma Admissions: Informing Resource Allocation, PLoS One.
