Dr. McChesney joined our surgical faculty in the Division of General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery after completing her residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans,  LA, and a fellowship at the University of Louisville Medical School, Louisville, KY.  The focus of her clinical practice includes colon and rectal cancer surgery, surgical endoscopy, pelvic prolapse, robotic surgery modalities and techniques, and inflammatory bowel disease. 

Research

Dr. McChesney’s research interests include ongoing developments in radical pelvic surgery and  promotion of colorectal cancer treatment options and trends. This direction of interest followed her through her fellowship at Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans, LA in Colon and Rectal Surgery Research.  Her most recent publications in peer reviewed journals include:  Modified Frailty Index Predicts Postoperative Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Radical Pelvic Surgery, The American Surgeon; CDCP1 Enhances Wnt Signaling in Colorectal Cancer Promoting Nuclear Localization of B-cantenin and E-cadherin, Oncogene; and Current US Preoperative Bowel Preparation Trends:  a 2018 Survey of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Members, Surgical Infections.

Dr. McChesney is a certified member of the American Board of Surgery, General Surgery and  the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Additionally, she holds membership in The American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and Central Surgical Association. She is the recipient of the Excellence in Surgical Education Award, the Charles Keller, Jr Surgical Career Award, and the Edward T. Krementz Basic Science Research Award, all from the Tulane University School of Medicine Department of Surgery, New Orleans, LA.

Education

Dr. McChesney received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison WI. She earned her MD from Rush Medical College, Chicago, IL, and completed a residency at Tulane University Medical Center, New Orleans, LA.  She completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery Research at Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans LA, and a further fellowship from the University of Louisville Medical School, Louisville, KY.

Dr. Huang joined our surgical faculty in the Department of Pediatric Surgery from her previous position as Associate Division Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery, and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Department of Surgery, at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN. A major focus of her research and clinical interest is improving and standardizing processes to increase effectiveness, efficiency and consistency of care for common pediatric surgical diseases.

Research
One of Dr. Huang’s primary interests is promoting innovative methods to implement guidelines for standardization of best practices across institutions to advance cost-effective accurate diagnostics for pediatric surgical interventions such as appendicitis and inguinal hernias. Another important focus is effective use of electronic health record data for research and knowledge generation to aid practitioners and families in caring for pediatric patients especially with complex congenital problems, such as Hirschprung’s disease. Among her recent publications in numerous peer reviewed journals are: Use of Computed Tomography Versus Clinical Acumen in Diagnosing Appendicitis in Children, Journal of Pediatric Surgery; Outcomes Associated with Early vs Late Initiation of Enteral Feeding Following Laparoscopic Gastrostomy, Nutrition in Clinical Practice; Probability of Failing to Meet Minimum Case Volumes in Pediatric Surgery Fellowship, Annals of Surgery; Telemedicine and Telementoring in the Surgical Specialties, American Journal of Surgery; Guidelines for the Management of Postoperative Soiling in Children with Hirschsprung’s Disease, Pediatric Surgery International.

Dr. Huang holds membership in the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of University Surgeons and the Association of Women Surgeons. She is also an active member in the American Medical Informatics Association. She is the recipient of the American Surgical Association – Association of Women Surgeons Surgical Leaders Fellowship Grant for 2020.

Dr. Huang received a Bachelor of Science from Yale University, New Haven, CT. She earned her MD at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Huang served her internship and residency in General Surgery at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, and completed a wound healing research fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She obtained her fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Memphis, TN. She also completed a Master of Science in Epidemiology in the Department of Preventive Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN, as a junior faculty.

Dr. Ardila joined our surgical faculty in the Division of General Surgery after completing a fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook, NY. Dr. Ardila’s clinical interests and specialties include bariatric and metabolic surgery, as well as minimally invasive foregut surgery. Other areas of expertise include gastrointestinal surgery, gastroesophageal reflux disease, biliary disease, surgical endoscopy, and general surgery.

Research

Dr. Ardila’s current research interests focuses on bariatric and metabolic surgery outcomes and optimizing enhanced recovery pathways in bariatric patients. Dr. Ardila’s recent publications include: Bone Mineral Density Changes after Bariatric Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy; Bariatric Surgery in Patients with Interstitial Lung Disease, Surgical Endoscopy; A Nationwide Safety Analysis of Discharge on the First Postoperative Day after Bariatric Surgery in Selected Patients, Obesity Surgery.

Dr. Khan joined our surgical faculty in the Division of General Surgery after completing a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX. His surgical focus and interests include colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, robotic surgery, complicated diverticulitis, and carcinoids. He has extensive training in minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques. Dr. Khan is a certified member of American Board of Surgery, General Surgery, and board eligible for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Research

Dr. Khan’s research interests include computer vision analysis of surgical videos for automated identification of operative steps and structures during robotic surgery. Additionally, he is also interested in development of image-guided precision tools for minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery. He has multiple publications in peer reviewed scientific and clinical journals including Journal of Surgical Research, Colorectal Disease, and International Journal of Surgery. He has also co-authored multiple chapters and online modules on minimally invasive techniques in surgery.

Dr. Deepa Magge joined our surgical faculty in the Division of Surgical Oncology & Endocrine Surgery as an assistant professor of Surgery after she served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY. She served as the Associate Program Director of the complex general surgical oncology fellowship and focused much of her time on teaching residents and fellows. She was presented the Resident Teaching Award during her tenure at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Magge’s specific areas of clinical interest include gastrointestinal (GI) surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal carcinomatosis, as well as other soft tissue malignancies. She is well-versed in minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, to treat most benign and malignant conditions and complex GI surgical oncology cases.  

Research
During Dr. Magge’s  residency at UPMC she performed 2 years of basic science and translational research, focusing on oncolytic viral therapy modulation, and was presented the Resident Research Award. Dr. Magge also completed numerous clinical research studies describing regional therapies, including Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for carcinomatosis secondary to multiple GI malignancies, as well as Isolated Hepatic Perfusion for unresectable liver metastases. She has over 20 first or last author publications as well as many other publications as collaborating author in peer-reviewed scientific and clinical journals. In addition, she has presented her research findings nationally. 

Memberships
Dr. Magge is currently board certified in General Surgery as well as Complex General Surgical Oncology. She will serve as a committee member for the Advanced Cancer Therapies Conference offered by the Society of Surgical Oncology, beginning her 2-year commitment this fall.

Education
Dr. Magge earned her bachelor degree with summa cum laude distinction in 2004 and medical degree with cum laude and AOA designation in 2008 from Boston University where she was part of their seven-year medical program. She was awarded the Anne and David Mishel Cancer Research Award for her early interests in oncologic care.

Dr. Magge completed her General Surgery residency at UPMC, there she also completed a fellowship in Complex Surgical Oncology, during which she served as Administrative Chief Fellow.

Dr. Bick joined our surgical faculty in the Department of Neurological Surgery after completing a residency and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston MA. Dr. Bick’s clinical interests include epilepsy, deep brain stimulation, movement disorders, essential tremor, psychiatric neurosurgery, and trigeminal neuralgia.

Research
Dr. Bick’s research focuses on uncovering neurophysiological signaling that underlies cognitive and emotional processes using intracranial recordings from human subjects. She studies the signals underlying memory and other cognitive processes. Better understanding of the neurophysiology of these processes allows for the development of new neuromodulation techniques for memory and psychiatric disorders. Her recent publications include: Vagus Nerve Stimulation Versus Responsive Neurostimulator System in Patients with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery; Caudate Stimulation Enhances Learning, Brain, A Journal Of Neurology; Preoperative MRI Findings Predict Diagnostic Utility of Foramen Ovale Electrodes, Journal of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Mubang joined our surgical faculty as an assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care after having completed his fellowships in Acute Care Surgery and Burn Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. His clinical areas of expertise include acute and reconstructive burns; burns and emergency treatment; trauma and critical care; emergency general surgery; and complex skin and soft tissue injury.

Research
Dr. Mubang’s current research focuses on burn surgery and lipid peroxidation, burn shock, and burn wound conversions necessitating surgery; muscle wasting in traumatic brain injury patients with the help of metabolomics; and smoking on home oxygen and burn related injuries. Prior research focused on traumatic brain injury and prognostication tools looking at computer tomography of the head to correlate with morbidity and mortality. Dr. Mubang also researched foreign objects during surgery by doing a systematic review and meta analysis of retained surgical items and blood product resuscitation in trauma.

Dr. Mubang is co-investigator on a grant to investigate the role of inflammatory markers in burn patients and novel therapeutic approaches to halt inflammation for the Division of Trauma and Burn Surgery at VUMC.

Dr. Christine Deyholos joined our surgical faculty in the Department of Vascular Surgery as an assistant professor of Surgery after completing a residency at Yale New Haven Medical Center, New Haven, CT. Dr. Deyholos’ clinical interests include peripheral arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, cerebrovascular disease, and hemodialysis access.

Dr. Deyholos’ previous research interests have included novel endovascular and hybrid approaches for treatment of aortic aneurysms and aortoiliac occlusive disease.
