Department of Radiology Announces New Leadership for Inpatient Services

The Department of Radiology recently announced new leadership for its inpatient service lines.

Jake Block, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology, will serve as Executive Medical Director for Vanderbilt Radiology. Colin McKnight, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology, will serve as Medical Director of Inpatient Radiology for Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH).

Dr. Block succeeds Steve Meranze, MD, Professor of Radiology and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, in his new role where he’ll be responsible for overseeing the hospital operations for the department and imaging clinical service center. He will maintain his existing leadership positions as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Section Chief of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Radiology.

“Over the years, the position of Executive Medical Director has continued to evolve to meet the needs of the organization,” said Dr. Meranze. “With the current focus on operations and operational efficiency, I can’t think of a better person to step into this position. Dr. Block is ideally suited to help guide the department and liaise with the hospital in these complex and exciting times.”

With his appointment as Executive Medical Director, Dr. Block made way for Dr. McKnight to move into the role of Medical Director of Inpatient Radiology at VUH, a position held by Dr. Block since 2008. As the new Medical Director of Inpatient Services, Dr. McKnight will help coordinate the variety of clinical resources in the Department of Radiology with those of other clinical departments to better support inpatient medical care.

“I hope to highlight the numerous ways radiologists support patient care, and further develop our department's capacity to support the many divisions encompassed within the Vanderbilt system,” said Dr. McKnight. “I am humbled and excited to take on this new role, and would like to thank Drs. Creasy and Omary for supporting my efforts at the divisional and the department levels, as well as Dr. Block for orienting me to the position.”

“We are excited that Dr. McKnight can apply his considerable talents to improve radiology’s operations for inpatients within our adult imaging enterprise,” added Reed Omary, MD, MS, Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair of Radiology.

Dr. Block earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He subsequently completed his diagnostic radiology residency and fellowship in emergency and musculoskeletal radiology at Vanderbilt prior to joining faculty in the MSK section in 1999.

Dr. McKnight earned his medical degree at Oregon Health and Science University prior to completing his residency and neuroradiology fellowship training at the University of Michigan. He joined Vanderbilt in 2016 as faculty in the Neuroradiology section.
