• 12/17/20: Year in Review 2020: Leadership appointments bolster VUMC’s missions. Josh Peterson, MD, MPH was appointed as director of the Center for Precision Medicine. Congratulations! 
• 12/17/20: Heart failure study seeks to reduce hospitalizations. Michael Ward, MD, PhD, co-led a national study finding that providing self-care interventions “empower[s] [emergency department] patients to be their own coaches” and reduces unnecessary hospitalizations.  
• 12/17/20: COVID-associated delays for elective services studied. This article showcases the work of several VCLIC members, including Jeremy Warner, MD, MS, Travis Osterman, DO, MS, Josh Peterson, MD, MPH, and Kevin Johnson, MD, MS. This study analyzed electronic health records to find several associations between delays and adverse outcomes, such as longer hospital stays.

• September 2020: Patty Sengstack, DNP, RN also authored an ANIA Position Statement which was just released in September, regarding the burden of EHR documentation. She has been leading a group of Nursing Informatics leaders across the nation on this effort. Congrats on a fantastic accomplishment!  
• October 2020: Patty Sengstack, DNP, RN, and Karen Hughart, MSN, BN were highlighted in an article in Computers, Informatics, Nursing (CIN) for their effort in sharing information during COVID-19, which was much needed at the beginning of the outbreak. Their video interview in April led to a series of 12 videos with other health systems and medical centers across the country.

• 9/8/21: IT transition a success at Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital: Multiple teams from across VUMC. Including several VCLIC members, recently led a transition of the clinical and IT systems at Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital (VTHH) in Tullahoma, TN. This effort represented a critical step in fully integrating the hospital into the Vanderbilt family. The IT transition brought several new systems and tools to VTHH, including eStar,  laboratory and imaging systems, pharmacy systems, new clinical equipment, and faster and more reliable wireless networks.

• 4/19/2021: Extracting accurate COVID data from scanned forms: Trent Rosenbloom, MD, MPH is a coinvestigator on this project, where the team used optical mark/character recognition software (OMR/OCR) to extract data from the scanned paper forms used for COVID patient intake.

• 12/6/22: Sara Horst, MD, MPH, Director of Ambulatory Telehealth, shared her perspective on VUMC’s recent transition from Zoom to Epic Telehealth in the VUMC reporter.
• 11/17/22: Dario Giuse, Dr. Ing, MS, along with collaborators from VUMC, the US and across the globe, published a paper in PLOS ONE titled “Systematic Review of International Studies Evaluating MDRD and CKD-EPI Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) Equations in Black Adults”. The piece was featured in the VUMC Reporter. 
• 10/13/22: Sara Horst, MD, MPH, was recently featured for her new roles in advancing digital health, including Associate Vice Chair for Digital Health Operations for the Department of Medicine and Assistant Chief for Clinical Informatics for the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition!
• 10/13/22: Josh Peterson, MD, MPH, FACMI and team were recently awarded a 5-year, $4.3M grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute to explore computational solutions to help address the problem of missed/delayed diagnosis for patients with rare genetic diseases!  
• 10/6/22: A study team including Laurie Novak, PhD and Gretchen Jackson, MD was featured for their work defining AI-related competencies for health professionals.  
• 9/22/22: The NIH awarded a four-year, $5.2 million grant to VUMC to lead the AI research core for the Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI) program. • 11/8/23: Laurie Novack, PhD, MHSA was featured in the VUMC reporter for being part of the VUMC team, in collaboration with Duke University School of Medicine for being awarded a $1.25 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for the project“Measuring Artificial Intelligence (AI) Maturity in Healthcare Organizations.”
• 11/3/23: Travis Osterman, DO, MS, FAMIA, FASCO was featured in the VUMC Reporter discussing a study done by GE Healthcare, VUMC and the University Medicine Essen in Germany. 
• 10/18/23: Eva Dye, DNP, APRN, NNP-BC, Wael Alrifai, MD, MS, Dan France, PhD, MPH, part of the NICU workload research group, had a journal of Perinatology article “Workload In Neonatology (WORKLINE): Validation and feasibility of a system for measuring clinician workload integrated into the electronic health record” recently highlighted in Vanderbilt's online magazine (Discoveries in Medicine).   
• 10/17/23: Daniel Byrne, MS and Jon Wanderer, MD had the research study "Model-Guided Decision-Making for Thromboprophylaxis and Hospital-Acquired Thromboembolic Events Among Hospitalized Children and Adolescents: The CLOT Randomized Clinical Trial" featured in the VUMC Reporter. 
• 10/16/23:  Eddie Qian, MD, MS, Adam Wright, PhD, and team published their ACORN Randomized Clinical Trial “Cefepime vs Piperacillin-Tazobactam in Adults Hospitalized With Acute Infection” in JAMA. This paper was covered in the VUMC Reporter!
• 8/15/23: Dara Mize, MD, Travis Osterman, DO, MS, FAMIA, FASCO, Yaa Kumah-Crystal, MD, MPH, MS and Ashley Spann, MD, MSACI were featured in the VUMC reporter for being among the 12 VUMC faculty who are currently serving two-year terms on 55 specialty steering boards constituted by Epic Systems. 
• 7/31/23: Featured in the VUMC Reporter, Siru Liu, PhD and Adam Wright, PhD, along with co-authors Allison McCoy, PhD, Elise Russo, MPH, PMP, Tom Reese, PharmD, PhD, and Melinda Aldrich, developed a computer algorithm that scans EHRS to identify patients who meet criteria for lung cancer screening.

• 5/11/23: Julie Bauml, MD and Aileen Wright, MD, MS were featured in the VUMC Reporter for winning the 2023 Physican Builder Award, as part of the eStar Physician Builder Program!  
• 2/9/23: Travis Osterman, DO, MS spoke about the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center participating in the CancerLinq Quality Initiative in the VUMC Reporter. 
• 1/23/23: Siru Liu, PhD, Allison McCoy, PhD, Thomas Reese, PharmD, PhD, Bryan Steitz, PhD, Elise Russo, MPH, PMP, Adam Wright, PhD and Brian Koh were featured in the VUMC Reporter for their use of machine learning based on EHRs of intensive care patients who had received periodic assessments for delirium during their hospital stays to gauge risk of delirium in hospitalized adult patients.

• 10/16/23:  Eddie Qian, MD, MS, Adam Wright, PhD, and team published their ACORN Randomized Clinical Trial “Cefepime vs Piperacillin-Tazobactam in Adults Hospitalized With Acute Infection” in JAMA. This paper was featured in NEJM’s Journal Watch here. 
• 7/23: Laurie Novak, PhD, Gretchen Purcell Jackson, MD, PhD and team’s article “Competencies for the use of artificial intelligence-based tools by health care professionals” was selected as a “Must Read” by Johns Hopkins’ Bayview Division of Internal Medicine. Congrats!  
• 6/26/23: Yaa Kumah-Crystal, MD, MPH, MS was recently featured in AI Anthology, a project by Eric Horvitz at Microsoft, about the encounter she had with ChatGPT helping to translate an ophthalmology note for her grandmother. 
• 6/3/23: Trent Rosenbloom, MD, MPH was featured in a MedPage Today article titled “Is Getting Test Results Online Right Away a Good Idea? Yes, Patients Say”.
