Nursing Informatics

 

As Senior Director of Nursing Informatics at VUMC Kathy provides strategic leadership in driving the use of informatics to promote and support nursing practice and improve patient outcomes. She has a joint report to the Chief Information Officer, Health IT and the Executive Chief Nursing Officer and is responsible for leading Nursing Informatics efforts across the organization. Kathy has over 35 years of health care experience including clinical nursing practice in Pediatric Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, and Pediatric Critical Care at Vanderbilt as well as experience in nursing leadership, informatics project management, and consulting.

Kathy served as project manager in the VUMC Informatics Center in 2005 where she managed projects including the implementation of an electronic nursing documentation system. Following a brief departure from Vanderbilt to serve as an information technology consultant and project manager, she returned in 2010 to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt as Director, Nursing and Clinical Support Services and later as Associate Nursing Officer. She provided administrative leadership to nursing services and programs such as Pediatric Ambulatory Nursing, Respiratory Care, and Wound Ostomy Nursing. Kathy was a key operational leader and pediatric nursing content design advisor for the Epic implementation at VUMC in 2017. In 2021, Kathy facilitated the implementation of bar code medication administration in the pediatric clinics in partnership with Vanderbilt Nursing Informatics Services and Pediatric Outpatient Support Services.

Kathy received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Belmont University and her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Kathy also received her Master of Business Administration from Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Kathy holds a Nurse Executive, Advanced certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She is a member of the VUMC Clinical Directors Group that provides Clinical Informatics input into development of VUMC’s EHR.

Her informatics interests include:

  • Care coordination and standardization of interdisciplinary care plans
  • Nursing documentation burden reduction
  • Use of smart room and other technology to optimize care, improve quality, and improve efficiencies
