Karl E. Misulis MD, PhD is Professor of Clinical Neurology & Professor of Clinical Biomedical Informatics, at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He also is Director of Neurology Hospitalist Service at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Karl received his BSc from Queen’s University Canada, MD from Vanderbilt, and PhD from SUNY-Upstate. He is board certified in Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Preventative Medicine, as well as Board Certified in Neurology and in Clinical Neurophysiology.

Prior to returning to Vanderbilt, Karl was principal in two startups, one of which produced custom scientific software, and the other produced ultrapure reagents for research laboratories.

Karl served as Chief Medical Information Officer until 2018 for West Tennessee Healthcare, a large public healthcare system, and continues to participate in educational and operational activities in biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt.

He has had 20 medical books published, with translations of many of these into languages as diverse as Chinese, Russian, and Polish, as well as Spanish and German. His most recent release is Essentials of Clinical Informatics, written and edited with Dr. Mark Frisse, and released in 2019 by Oxford University Press.

Karl has a passion for leveraging our advanced informatics tools to improve healthcare today. We must keep one eye on the future, and the other on the patient needing our skills right now.
