Shared Clinical Curriculum

Curriculum for Vanderbilt's Diagnostic (DR) and integrated Interventional Radiology (IR) residency programs, including DR residents selecting the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) program, have an identical experience during the first three years of residency. The two programs diverge at the start of the fourth year. DR residents are given the full flexibility of the fourth year available within the guidelines of the ABR and the ACGME. IR residents get the full advantage of being in one of the first and most innovative IR residency programs in the country, while still fulfilling all the requirements of this new program. We also offer the ABR 16 month nuclear medicine pathway as an optional track during DR residency.

    • Daily didactic lectures and case conference in all clinical aspects of diagnostic and interventional radiology.
    • Program in leadership development
    • Strong focus on non-interpretive skills
    • Weekly physics course and two-week intensive physics "capstone" course
  • The fourth year of diagnostic radiology is incredibly flexible at Vanderbilt. Residents are encouraged to personalize their training to their ultimate career pathway. Some residents choose to do "mini-fellowships" of six months in a single area, some prefer two- to three-month "chunks" while others prefer a fully diverse year with rotation in a different subspecialty each month. Additionally, non-clinical time is available through the leadership development time. Residents in the recent past have used this time to for (among other projects): 
     
    • Research at the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS)
    • Development of a novel imaging and anatomy course for third-year medical students
    • Interventional radiology device development
    • Taking courses at the Vanderbilt Owen College of Business
    • Working on complicated quality improvement projects
