COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will have the opportunity to work with substance use disorder patients in the inpatient setting where they will participate in the management of patients withdrawing from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines and other substances of abuse. They will often assist in managing comorbid abuse of substances, complicated by concurrent medical and psychiatric disorders. Students typically are expected to follow several patients under the supervision of attending addiction psychiatrists. Students will experience diverse psychiatric conditions and develop an appreciation of the complex contributions of and interactions between the biological, psychological, and social domains. Assigned readings will supplement patient care experiences. There is also opportunity to observe outpatient management of patients with substance use and other psychiatric disorders
