Re-Entry into the Workplace after Parental Leave

By Natalie Dodd, LCSW

Let’s be honest, reentry back into the workplace after any type of leave can be challenging. The “mentally I’m here” feeling when reminiscing over a recent trip or enjoyable activity can be even more exacerbated when returning to work after family leave.

I happen to be in the swing of this after recently welcoming my first child. The echo of my child’s “ghost cry” is palpable throughout my day, alerting me to my first separation from her. Remember, you are doing an amazing job! This transition is not meant to be easy, but it is also not meant to be experienced alone.

If you notice you are feeling an increase in separation anxiety, worry, or fear while at work, this is completely understandable. You may need extra support to better manage your current experiences, especially if they are negatively disrupting your daily life.

If this is something you are experiencing, or if you could use some tools and tips to better support a partner or loved one experiencing these symptoms, please call Work/Life Connections-EAP at 615-936-1327 to schedule your free and confidential appointment today.
