Perioperative Medicine – Vice Chair: Miklos D. Kertai, MD, MMHC, PhD

For the Assistant Vice Chair of Perioperative Medicine position:

Overview: Advancing perioperative medicine is a core mission of the Vanderbilt Health Department of Anesthesiology. The Assistant Vice Chair for Perioperative Medicine (AVC PM) oversees the development and implementation of departmental initiatives related to perioperative medicine. The AVC PM works with the Vice Chair for Perioperative Medicine, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, and division chiefs to coordinate efforts related to development, implementation, operations, auditing, and feedback.

Appointment

The AVC PM is appointed by and serves at the request of the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.

Reporting

The AVC PM reports directly to the Vice Chair of Perioperative Medicine and, subsequently, to the Executive Vice Chair and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.

Responsibilities

1. Perioperative Medicine

  1. Collaborate with and support the directors whose portfolios fall under the purview of the Assistant Vice Chair for Perioperative Medicine, including:
    1. Medical Director of the Vanderbilt Preoperative Evaluation Clinic (VPEC)
    2. edical Director of the Hi-RiSE* Preoperative Optimization Clinic
    3. Medical Director of Preoperative Holding and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
    4. Director of the Acute Pain Service (APS)
    5. Director of the Perioperative Consult Service
    6. Director(s) of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
    7. Director of Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)
  2. The AVC PM should focus collaborative efforts within this portfolio on improving patient outcomes, standardizing best-practice care, and ensuring operational consistency across the perioperative system at Vanderbilt Health.

2. Expansion

  1. Develop new opportunities for clinical care standardization and departmental education to implement the latest evidence-based practices in the perioperative period and monitor the performance of these initiatives through quality and safety metrics.

3. Academic Product

  1. Mentor faculty interested in scholarship, program development, and administration in the areas of perioperative medicine.
  2. It is expected that these responsibilities will lead to demonstrable academic contributions, including national presentations, peer-reviewed abstracts, and peer-reviewed publications.

4. Reporting

  1. Provide updates on ongoing projects related to perioperative medicine, care standardization, and the implementation of evidence-based practices, including:
    1. Quarterly updates to the Vice Chair of Perioperative Medicine
    2. Annual updates to the Executive Committee and Division Chiefs
