Department Names Davis Chief of Breast Imaging Section

The Department of Radiology recently named Katie M. Davis, DO, Assistant Professor of Radiology, Section Chief of Breast Imaging, a position she has held in an interim capacity since 2021.

In her role, Davis will oversee all day-to-day and clinical operations of the section, including all mammograms, breast and axillary ultrasounds, breast MRIs, and interventional breast procedures at the Vanderbilt Breast Center – an American College of Radiology-designated Center of Excellence – as well as at multiple outpatient facilities.

“After a nationwide search, we are honored that Dr. Davis has accepted the role of Section Chief of Breast Imaging for Vanderbilt Radiology,” said Reed Omary, MD, MS, Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair of Radiology. “She is extremely well-poised to elevate the breast imaging section across its clinical, educational, and research missions.”

Davis will also be responsible for leading and growing the section, ensuring coordination with breast surgeons, oncologists, and clinical nurse practitioners throughout the Medical Center; and engaging in collaborative research opportunities with colleagues within the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

“Since assuming the role of interim Section Chief last year, Dr. Davis’s performance has been remarkable,” added Omary. “She has helped the section navigate COVID-19’s Omicron surge, manage increasing clinical demands, and successfully recruit two exceptional breast imagers who will join us this September.”

"I aim to continue a mission of clinical excellence at Vanderbilt’s breast imaging sites while also upholding the department's values of collegiality, collaboration, and creativity,” said Davis. “I will also prioritize the department’s education, diversity, and research efforts, as integration of these principles embolden us to thoughtfully engage in an ever-changing healthcare landscape."

Davis joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center as faculty in 2018, and is currently the Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Radiology. She will continue to serve in this role, in addition to supporting the educational programming for the two breast imaging fellows and 36 radiology residents who rotate throughout the section each year.

"I am honored to engage with trainees, patients, referring providers, and the Medical Center in this new role, and am grateful for the support of my mentors and numerous colleagues at Vanderbilt, and beyond."

Davis earned her medical degree from Ohio University, Heritage College of Medicine, and completed her diagnostic radiology residency at Case Western Reserve University. She subsequently completed a fellowship in Women’s Imaging at Magee Women’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She is actively involved in the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), currently serving as a Young Physician Section Committee Member. Her interests in breast imaging include education, patient outreach and high-risk screening.
