Diabetes Prevention Program

Health Plus offers the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to support VUMC faculty/staff and spouses in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes.

Through the program you will gain:

  • Connections to others in the VUMC community who are working toward the same goals.

  • Skills to help you eat healthier, be more active, and reduce stress.

  • Access to a trained lifestyle coach for one year.

There is no charge to participate in the program.

A new cohort of the Diabetes Prevention Program will begin in September! Register to attend an information session to learn more about the program. Information sessions will be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, August 14 at 4:30pm
  • Wednesday, August 21 at 12pm/noon
  • Friday, August 30 at 12pm/noon

Eligibility

If you have a Body Mass Index of 25 or higher (23 or higher if you are of Asian descent) and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, then you may be eligible to participate.

You can determine your risk by:

  • Taking the "Prediabetes Risk Test".
  • Having one of the following blood tests done by a healthcare professional:
    • Fasting glucose test. This measures blood glucose in people who have not eaten anything for at least eight hours. Results of 100 to 125 mg/dL indicate prediabetes.
    • Glucose tolerance test. This test is typically given during pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes. Women who have had gestational diabetes are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
    • Hemoglobin A1c test. This test measures the amount of glucose that is on the red blood cells. Fasting is not necessary. An A1c value of 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes.
