Wael Alrifai, MD, MS, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Biomedical Informatics, is a board-certified neonatologist in the Division of Neonatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and a board-certified clinical informaticians in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. He holds a master’s degree in applied clinical informatics.

Dr. Alrifai is a VUMC HealthIT clinical director for pediatrics. He designed electronic health records clinical content for VUMC neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and multiple NICUs in the state of Tennessee.

Dr. Alrifai’s research focus is in the area of clinical decision support (CDS) for neonatal care. He designed and published randomized clinical trials in the evaluation of clinical information systems in neonatal care, and has multiple ongoing trials in the evaluation of CDS tools. Dr. Alrifai has a record of funded research to evaluate health information technology tools. He is a member of the Epic Neonatology Steering Board. Currently, Dr. Alrifai is mentoring trainees at multiple educational levels in their conduct of research projects to evaluate health information technology tools.
