Kelly Hewitt, MD, FACS

Dr. Kelly Hewitt joined our surgical faculty from her most recent post as breast surgical oncologist and Medical Director of the Breast Program at St. Charles Cancer Center, Bend, OR. She held a prior position as general surgeon at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, Newport, OR. Her particular areas of research and clinical interest include breast cancer and breast cancer surgery, clinical trials, rural health disparities, and breast cancer care in rural areas. 

Research
Dr. Hewitt’s research focuses on the special issues surrounding breast cancer and outcomes of care and treatment in rural areas, including possible disparities. Other facets of her research include treatment of young women with breast cancer and overdiagnosis and overtreatment in breast cancer. Dr. Hewitt’s most recent publications in peer reviewed journals include: Positive Margins after Mastectomy in Patients with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast:  Incidence and Management Strategies, American Journal of Surgery; Oncological Outcomes of Total Skin-Sparing Mastectomy for Invasive Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast: A 20-Year Institutional Experience, Annals of Surgical Oncology; and The Evolution of Our Understanding of the Biology of Cancer Is the Key to Understanding and Avoiding Overdiagnosis and Overtreatment, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. 

Memberships, Awards and Honors
Dr. Hewitt is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, General Surgery.  Additionally, she is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Southwest Surgical Congress, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.   

Education
Dr. Hewitt received a Bachelor of Science from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. She earned her MD at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC, and her internship and residency in general surgery followed at the University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Hewitt served a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco, CA.
