This grand rounds lecture is designed for faculty, residents, staff and medical students.

Learning objectives of this presentation include the following:

  1. Understand the various definitions of innovation and entrepreneurship within academic medicine
  2. Identify barriers to innovation and entrepreneurship in academic medicine

  3. Develop solutions that change academic culture to bend towards high-risk innovation

Kevin R. Ward, M.D., FACEP, FAAEM, is Professor of Emergency Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan.  He serves as the Executive Director for the Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care. His passion is in developing programs which encourage high-risk innovation through strategic integrative, and disciplined collaborations across medicine, engineering, information sciences, and industry that promote true solutions. Dr. Ward also designed and served as the inaugural Executive Director for the University of Michigan’s Fast Forward Medical Innovation Program which has been responsible for producing significant increases in the University’s biomedical intellectual property portfolio, technology licensing, business start-ups, and industry partnerships.  He has developed biomedical innovation education programs which are being widely adopted at many of the nation’s premier academic medical centers and universities.  Dr. Ward’s major research focus is in developing platform technologies to improve the care of the critically ill and injured with an emphasis on combat casualty care.  Dr. Ward is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps.
