A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Our Department has a long and rich history of excellence in academic pathology, including exceptional patient care, education and research.

We are the academic home of Vanderbilt Medical Laboratories. Our faculty and trainees work with an outstanding technical and operations team to provide state-of-the-art anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine services for our VUMC patients and clinicians, as well as those served by health systems throughout the country.

Our faculty lead cutting-edge basic science, translational and clinical research programs focused on microbiology, immunology, cancer and other aspects of human pathology. We are amongst the highest-ranked Pathology departments in the United States for research funding, and many of our faculty have received national and international awards for their innovation, education, and research productivity.

In these clinical and academic endeavors, we are also focused on training the next generation of clinicians and scientists. We are leaders in the education of medical students, pathology residents and fellows, graduate students and postdoctoral research fellows, medical technologists, histotechnologists, and clinical laboratory assistants, among others.
