Assessment of the Ocular Microbiome in Health and Disease
Vanderbilt researchers are looking for healthy individuals over the age of 18 to participate in a research study to assess the ocular microbiome (surface of the eyes). The goal of this study is to build a database of normal healthy individuals and characterize the normal ocular microbiome, to describe the microscopic organisms that reside on the healthy ocular surface. No personal health records will be reviewed or collected for the study. Non-invasive specimen collection from both eyes. Both eyes will be anesthetized, and a cotton swab is used to gently swipe inside the lower and upper eyelids. The study will enroll approximately 500 patients.

SEER-2 Neurotropic Keratopathy
Dr. Christine Shieh, is conducting a research study to evaluate an ophthalmic solution (eye drop) to treat Neurotropic Keratitis (NK). Neurotropic Keratitis is a degenerative ocular disease caused by impairment of the corneal nerves and characterized by loss of corneal sensitivity. If not properly managed, there is a risk of vision loss. SEER-2 is a clinical study to assess the safety and efficacy of Thymosin β4 Ophthalmic Solution (RGN-259) for the treatment of Neurotropic Keratopathy (NK). The study will enroll approximately 70 patient with chronic stage 2 and 3 NK in 35 sites in the US.
