Sanam Ladi Seyedian, PGY1

Sanam! You have taken such a unique path to residency. Can you tell us a little about that journey?

I was born and raised in Tehran, capital of Iran. Medical schools in Iran have about 8 years of study. I started research early at med school and started working at a urology research center at my second year and got involved in numerous projects in pediatric urology, pelvic medicine and urologic oncology as well as translational projects/tissue engineering projects related to urology. After graduating from medical school, I decided to pursue my research and academic career in the US. I joined USC urology as a research fellow and worked specifically on bladder and testis cancer. Last year I applied for urology residency and now here I am 🙂 .

How has your transition to Nashville been?

Nashville and LA are quite different, and moving here kind of feels like another immigration journey. I am still figuring things out and exploring.

What is your favorite thing to do around Nashville? Any favorite restaurants?

Something I really like about Nashville is its nature, especially the stunning fall season, so I can say my favorite thing to do in Nashville is hiking and enjoying the nature. And the food scene here is amazing; I am still checking out different restaurants and bars!

What do you miss most about home?

Definitely my family and friends. Also, I miss Tehran a lot. Tehran has a great vibe with cool cafes and amazing restaurants. Also, its beautiful mountains add to the charm. There's always a ton of things to do!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

My plan is to pursue a fellowship after residency. After several years of research and academic works, I see my future as an academic urologist. I really love to teach and mentor others. Also, my goal is to have a protected time for research which is my big passion. So, my ultimate goal is to become a leader in surgical care and academic urology who will make meaningful contributions to the field.

What is something that most people in the department might not know about you?

My great interest in music. I am playing a Persian musical instrument called Santur and I am taking singing classes.

Any hidden talents that we should be aware of?

I think I already peaked by talking about my baking.
