Trainee Spotlight

February 2023

Amy Reed, MD

Amy Reed, ENDO Fellow

Hey Amy! Thank you for agreeing to the interview. Excited to get to know more about you. Tell us a little bit about where you grew up and your journey here to Nashville!

My Dad was in the Army so we moved every three years growing up – 11 moves total. So I grew up all over. My family is now mostly in Kansas City. Being from a military family, I also wanted to serve. I joined the Air Force after college and went to USUHS, the military medical school. I did residency in San Antonio and then worked as a general urologist at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio for two years. Then I decided I wanted to go back for fellowship and was lucky enough to end up at Vanderbilt!

What inspired you to train in Endourology?

Endourology and robotics were always my favorite cases in residency. I enjoyed the variety in types of cases and patients.

Where do you think you will end up landing after fellowship is over?

I think I’ll be going back to San Antonio to join the faculty at Brooke Army Medical Center – where I trained.

Aside from work, what are your other interests? Any secret hobbies?  Unusual skills?

I like to try to restaurants and bars. I love to travel. I recently got scuba certified so have been into diving recently!

If you weren’t tackling kidney stones and large prostates, what career would you want to pursue?

Professional travel blogger. Someone would definitely pay me to do that, I’m sure.

Love it. What is your favorite endourology instrument and why??

The digital ureteroscope. It so easy to use and love – just superior technology. Or the stone crusher – makes me feel powerful.

Ok, let’s do some rapid-fire questions.
