Trainee Spotlight

December 2022

Levi Bowers, MD

Levi Bowers, PGY1

How's it going Levi?! Welcome to the Spotlight! Must be nice being done with your first in-service-exam, I heard the raw scores are only bound to go up! How about we start by having you tell me a little bit about yourself (who you are, where are you from, where are you going)?

Hello! Definitely a good feeling to be done with that in-service exam; remind me to brush up on my management of testis cancer before next year. About me… I am from Pittsburgh, PA and am the youngest child of three, with two older sisters. I moved to Philadelphia for undergrad, where I attended Haverford College, but then made my way back to Pittsburgh for medical school, making this my first time living outside of Pennsylvania, and I have been absolutely loving it!

How does it feel to be (almost) half-way through your intern year?

Levi with family

It’s a wild feeling. I’m still not sure how time has flown by so fast. On the one hand, I’m thrilled to already be done with half of intern year; on the other, it’s terrifying to know that I only have six months left to prepare for the second-year grind.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned as an intern and what advice would give to 4th year medical students that will be making the transition to intern-year next summer?

I’ll give you three. Always replace electrolytes appropriately. Take every moment of failure as an opportunity to grow (been doing a lot of growing this year). Be nice.

Might be a little too early, but do you have an idea of what area of urology you'd like to further pursue?

Honestly, I could see myself happy going into many of the urology subspecialties! If I had to pick right now, it would be between male reconstructive urology and endourology.

I'm going to switch it up a bit now - tell me, what are your other interests when not at work? Hobbies? Reading vs. Binging Netflix? Play any sports? Traveling?

Niel and co-residents

I love music and going to concerts, listening to podcasts, eating good food, playing board games, watching football and fútbol, and staying active with runs throughout Nashville.

Alight, time for some rapid fire questions:

Favorite urology case? Buried penis repair
Favorite film or television show? Better Call Saul
Your go to drink? The “Urine good hands” by Cocktologist extraordinaire, Rohan Bhalla.
Favorite holiday? Halloween
Last one. Favorite post call meal? Taco Bell from the Children’s Hospital.
