I’m currently in the middle of my three month rotation at the Nashville VA across the street from VUMC. Before this I spent 3 months on the Endourology rotation and also on research. It’s my second time at the VA and it’s been a fun experience both times. The vets are a fulfilling group of patients to work with, especially as a resident as they’re very understanding about working with trainees.

Thanks for sitting down with us, so what’s going on with you at Vanderbilt?

Any stories you’d like to share?

Having spent three years here now, is there anything in particular you miss from the northeast?

Definitely the food – or at least the variety. Living in New York, we were just a subway ride away from any type of cuisine you want. That’s not to say we haven’t found a few gems here in Nashville too.

You mentioned research earlier, anything exciting to share?

My three months of research was my first block and I could not have asked for a better start to a year. It was a fantastic break from our rigorous second year. Having spent much of my time in medical school focusing on oncology, I wanted to branch out a bit into the other fields in Urology like kidney stones. From that side we’re working on using technology built by Vanderbilt to extract meaningful data from Vanderbilt’s electronic medical records to investigate stone disease outcomes. A nice juxtaposition is the oncology work that I’ve been involved in using the National Cancer Database to evaluate the role of hospital volume in patient outcomes for urologic malignancies. This work will be presented as posters / podiums at several upcoming conferences – SESAUA, ROCK and AUA 2020 and hopefully in print!
