Trainee Spotlight

June 2022

Shaan Seita

Shaan Setia, Endo Fellow

Thanks so much for agreeing to this interview, Shaan! I'm excited to learn more about you. Let's start with the basics. Tell us a little about yourself.

Well, I have grown up in the Chicagoland area. My parents are in the southwest suburbs, but I lived downtown for undergrad at Loyola and then again during residency at Rush University Medical Center. I left for a few years for medical school in Virginia.

How has life in Nashville been? What fun stuff do you get into on the weekends?

Life has been great! My wife and I have been spending time hiking nearby or exploring the restaurant scene.

The food scene here is phenomenal. What is your favorite restaurant in the area?

There have been so many good places. I loved O-Ku sushi, Barcelona wine bar, and The Yellow porch to name a few. Favorite brunch place has been Milk & Honey.

So, what made you decide on endourology??

I had such a good experience in residency. I just really loved the versatility and all the different types of procedures that we are trained for.

I was watching Magic School Bus this weekend and it got me thinking...If you were a kidney stone, which would you be?

Hmmm. I think Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate because I am pretty hard-headed.

Love it. What is your favorite endourology toy and why??

You have to love all the lasers.

So, FPMRS fellows don't take call, but our endourology counterparts do. How's life in the physician lounge? Any crazy call cases this year?

Haha the physician lounge really isn’t that great… but hey, I'll take the free food. I think I have been pretty lucky with call so far. Nothing absolutely crazy, but I have plenty to go. It will catch up to me soon I am sure.

It's hard to believe that our first year is nearing the end. What are you thinking for post-fellowship?

We will see. Maybe back home to Chicago, maybe the east coast. I am just starting to figure out where we will apply.

Before you immerse yourself in your future position, any travel plans? What's on your bucket list?

I have been itching to go overseas! Covid really pushed off plans. We are planning hopefully a trip to Europe (likely Spain or Italy).

Ok- last question- why should residents consider specializing in endourology?

Such a good group of people with happy lives and the patients are so thankful. There are no better reasons.
