Hazardous Material Decontamination Training

About This Training

This training is required by the OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER), and The Joint Commission.  Patients may arrive at VUMC who have been contaminated with some kind of hazardous material may arrive at VUMC.  VUMC emergency personnel must know how to provide care so that contamination does not spread and so that the patient can be treated safely. 

Who Needs This Training

This training is for VUMC Adult and Children's Hospital Emergency Department personnel who will be members of the VUMC Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) decontamination team.  Members of this team learn to safely decontaminate patients who arrive at VUMC and are contaminated with a hazardous material. 

How Training is Provided

This training is provided in two parts.  

  • Part I is an online course available in the VUMC Learning Exchange.  This course is available for self-enrollment. Search courses for "Introduction to Hazardous Material Decontamination Training - Part I" to enroll.  You must complete this training before you can sign up for Part II
  • Part II is instructor-led training that is scheduled monthly.  Log in to the Learning Exchange and search courses for "Hazardous Material Decontamination Training – Part II" to register.

After completing this initial training, emergency department personnel are required to complete annual refresher training.  Annual training is provided within the Emergency Department.
