Division of Facial Aesthetic Surgery

The Division of Facial Aesthetic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center provides comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical care for patients seeking facial rejuvenation and aesthetic or functional improvement of the nose and eyelids.

Led by Patrick Assi, MD, our division combines advanced surgical techniques, individualized treatment planning, and an academic commitment to research and education. Our clinical approach emphasizes facial harmony, preservation of essential anatomy, structural support, and results tailored to each patient's features and goals.

From complex rhinoplasty to comprehensive facial rejuvenation, we offer specialized care informed by surgical expertise and an understanding of the intricate anatomy of the face.

Conditions We Treat

  • Facial aging and loss of facial and neck definition
  • Aesthetic concerns of the nose
  • Nasal asymmetry and structural deformities
  • Nasal obstruction when appropriate for our clinical services
  • Drooping eyebrows and upper eyelid changes
  • Lower eyelid bags, hollowness, and age-related changes around the eyes
  • Changes in facial skin texture and tone

Procedures We Offer

Facial Rejuvenation Surgery

Facial aging involves changes in the skin, underlying soft tissues, facial fat, and deeper supporting structures. Our approach to facial rejuvenation is tailored to these changes and each patient's anatomy.

Surgical options include facelift and neck lift procedures, including deep-plane techniques and advanced neck contouring when indicated. Treatment plans may also incorporate skin resurfacing and individualized skincare to address skin quality and complement surgical results.

Eyelid and Brow Rejuvenation

The eyes and brows play a central role in facial expression and perceived age. We offer upper and lower blepharoplasty and brow lifting tailored to individual anatomy, including approaches to eyelid fat repositioning, orbital hollowing, and brow position when appropriate.

Our goal is to address excess skin, bags, and age-related changes while respecting eyelid function and preserving a natural appearance.

Functional and Aesthetic Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty requires a detailed understanding of nasal anatomy, structural support, skin characteristics, and airway function. Our approach incorporates structural and preservation rhinoplasty techniques selected according to each patient's anatomy and surgical goals.

Surgical options may include precise nasal bone reshaping using ultrasonic technology, refinement of the nasal dorsum and tip, and structural reconstruction when needed. For patients with functional concerns, treatment planning also considers nasal breathing and the underlying causes of obstruction.

Both primary and revision rhinoplasty require individualized planning, with an emphasis on long-term structural stability and balanced facial proportions.

Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation

Nonsurgical treatments can complement surgery or address selected concerns independently. Options may include laser-based skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and other appropriate treatments to improve skin texture, tone, and signs of photoaging.

Treatment recommendations are based on skin characteristics, clinical indications, and the patient's goals.

Neuromodulators and Dermal Fillers

Injectable treatments, including neuromodulators such as Botox and dermal fillers, may be used to address selected dynamic wrinkles and volume-related concerns. Treatment is individualized according to facial anatomy and the desired outcome.

Research, Education, and Innovation

As an academic division within Vanderbilt University Medical Center, we are committed to advancing facial aesthetic surgery through clinical research, outcomes assessment, and surgical education. Our academic mission includes evaluating surgical techniques, improving our understanding of outcomes, and contributing to the development of evidence-based approaches to patient care.

Through clinical practice and academic collaboration, we strive to advance the specialty while maintaining a focus on patient safety, thoughtful surgical judgment, and individualized care.

"Facial aesthetic surgery requires technical precision, sound judgment, and an appreciation for each patient's individuality. As Director, I am committed to advancing our specialty through excellent patient care, research, and surgical education, with a focus on natural results and the highest standards of surgical practice."
