ALS/BLS Ambulance Service Line

Ground Transport EMS

LifeFlight Ground Transport teams are an integral part of a comprehensive community-based EMS system designed to provide both high-acuity urgent interfacility transports to higher-level care and scheduled non-urgent transport of patients from VUMC hospitals to post-acute care facilities or home.  LifeFlight Ground EMS also responds to requests for mutual aid to support any community 911 or hospital system during times of natural disaster, mass casualty, or other extreme circumstances.  Each LifeFlight Ground transport base is specifically aligned in communities requiring direct support of VUMC hospitals or partnering facilities; however, the entire program responds to requests across a multi-state region. 

Paramedic (ALS Ground Ambulance) (Full time or PRN)

The paramedic is responsible for assessment, treatment, and transport of all types of patients and conditions and must be able to provide the level of care required to match the patient’s needs (ALS, BLS, or Specialty Care).  The paramedic must initiate and or adapt patient care plans according to scope of practice requirements and LifeFlight-approved treatment protocols and medical direction.  The paramedic is responsible for continuously reassessing and adjusting care as conditions change with the goal of always optimizing outcomes. The paramedic is expected to always deliver exceptional compassion, professionalism, patient care, and customer service.  Effective communication and close collaboration with EMS team members, hospital staff, communicators, and other key stakeholders are essential.

The paramedic will communicate with all medical personnel and facilities staff in a respectful manner while obtaining instructions or feedback for transport and hand-off.  The paramedic will communicate clearly and concisely via radio to relay critical and time-sensitive patient information to receiving facilities.  The paramedic will complete all required documentation appropriately and in a timely manner.  The paramedic will always operate an emergency vehicle and equipment in a safe and effective manner. The paramedic will work closely with their teammates to check, restock, inventory, and clean emergency vehicles and supplies as to stay ready for a timely response.  The paramedic will stay in good standing with state and institutional requirements.

  • High school diploma/GED 

  • TN Paramedic License (if transferring from another state, must have verified TN license by the first day of employment) 

  • Valid driver’s license issued by state of residence 

  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Training and VKF training is required (Can be taken during the orientation period). 

  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS are required. PHTLS must be obtained within 1 year.  

 

Ground Transport AEMT (BLS/ALS or Critical Care Ground) (Full time or PRN)

LIFEFLIGHT TRANSPORTATION COORDINATION CENTER AND OFFICE OF EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS

Located in the Regional Operational Coordinator Center, the LifeFlight Transportation Coordination Center is responsible for planning, coordination, and dispatch of all emergent and non-emergent LifeFlight Ground Ambulance transport requests and third-party transport vendors, who augment transport requests to and from Vanderbilt Health facilities.  

Located at the top of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the Office of Emergency Communications is responsible for helipad safety with incoming/outgoing aircraft, managing responder teams within the Vanderbilt University Hospital, managing information flow between EMS and Hospitals and coordinating all emergency communications within the Region 5 of the state Regional Medical Coordination Center.

Flight Coordinator - Licensed

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience) (Required)

Critical Care Service Line

Vanderbilt LifeFlight was named the 2020 AAMS Program of the Year and is Tennessee’s premier critical care medical transport program, providing service via helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and ground ambulances. Our team has an accident-free safety record since its inception in 1984. We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Trauma Systems (CAMTS) and are an IFR program.  Our helicopter fleet includes the following: EC145, EC-135, and H-130. Our fixed-wing aircraft is a Pilatus PC-12.

We transport to all Nashville hospitals and have immediate access to the region's only Level I Trauma Center, Burn Center, and Children's Hospital, all at Vanderbilt. Our helicopters will carry a Nurse/MD, NP/Paramedic, NP/Nurse, Nurse/Nurse, or Nurse/Paramedic team. All RN helicopter crew members are dual licensed with both RN and EMT-P or EMT multi-state licenses. Our critical care ground ambulances have an EMT/AEMT, Critical Care Paramedic, and Critical Care Nurse.

Critical Care Paramedic (Ambulance, Critical Care Ground) (Full time or PRN)

  • Graduate of an accredited discipline-specific program
  • Three years of experience as a paramedic in an emergency setting (required) however, five years is preferred
  • Certifications including BLS, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS or BTLS
  • Licensed Paramedic in TN and KY or the ability to obtain a license in these areas
  • Tennessee Critical Care Paramedic (CCEMT-P) certification is required, and additionally Flight Paramedic Certification (FP-C) is preferred. FP-C certification is required within one year of employment.

Flight Critical Care Nurse (full-time positions only)

  • Three years ED/Critical Care experience (ideally at a Level I Trauma Center)
  • Pediatric experience greater than 640 hours if not included in above experience
  • Tennessee licnesed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P)
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • NRP
  • One of the following: CEN, CCRN, and/or CFRN certifications
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course, Transport Nurse Advanced Trauma Course (TNATC) or PHTLS
  • Strong preference for previous flight experience

Flight Critical Care Paramedic (full-time positions only)

The Flight Paramedic provides advanced pre-hospital and inter-facility patient care from initial contact until care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility. Maintains thorough patient care documentation of assessment and intervention throughout the entire transport and will practice within the scope of practice as defined by the state of Tennessee and program protocols. Demonstrates proficient clinical knowledge and competency of psychomotor skills during transport and will maintain through actively participating in ongoing advanced skills laboratories and hands-on clinical exercises. Acts as a clinical role model and resource to resolve complex situations and patient care issues. Participates in improvement activities and problem-solving projects as assigned by the leadership team. Communicates safety concerns to the leadership team, educational needs of customers, and service area and delivers stellar customer service to both internal and external customers.
