Medical Oncology:

 

Amanda Cass, PharmD, BCPS, BCOP

Dr. Cass is a clinical pharmacist in the Thoracic Oncology Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 2016 and subsequently completed her Pharmacy Practice Residency at Grady Health System and became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 2017. In 2018, she completed her Oncology Pharmacy Residency at the University of North Carolina Medical Center.

Dr. Cass's previous research interests included opioid use in non-metastatic cancer patients after curative treatment and albumin effects on oxaliplatin related toxicities. Her current areas of interest are molecular mutations and use of targeted therapies in NSCLC, immunotherapy in SCLC, and global oncology care.

Dr. Cass is the preceptor for the Outpatient Thoracic Oncology Rotation.

 

Manny CortezManuel Cortez, PharmD, BCOP

Dr. Cortez is a clinical pharmacist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center practicing in inpatient Medical Oncology. He received his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and completed his Pharmacy Practice and Oncology Pharmacy Residencies at the University of Chicago Medicine. During his residency Dr. Cortez served as a member of the ASHP Drug Shortage Task Force and investigated vaccination practices in solid organ candidates as well as inpatient vs. outpatient conditioning regimens in autologous stem cell transplant.

Dr. Cortez is the preceptor for the Inpatient Medical Oncology Rotation.

Dr. Butler is a clinical pharmacy specialist who has been practicing in the cancer pain clinic at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center since 2018.  He received his doctorate of pharmacy from the University of Tennessee Health and Science Center and completed a pharmacy practice residency at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, TN.  He completed his hematology/oncology pharmacy residency at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA.  Outside of his clinical duties, he is an adjunct professor at Belmont University, co-chair of the Vanderbilt Opioid Safety and Stewardship committee and an active member of the Society of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacists (SPPCP) and Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC).

Dr. Butler is the preceptor for the Cancer Pain and Symptom Management Clinic.

Dr. McCabe is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing as the Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Adult Sarcoma and Melanoma at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, she completed her Pharmacy Practice and Oncology Pharmacy Residencies at Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta, GA. As a PGY1, she was the recipient of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) Trainee Research Award for her research surrounding oral chemotherapy and the role of the pharmacist.

Outside of her clinical responsibilities, Dr. McCabe serves as the Adult Sarcoma faculty member for ACCP/ASHP Oncology Pharmacy Preparatory Review and Recertification Course for the PBS Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) Program. She serves as a content contributor for the sarcoma chemotherapy regimens for ChemoExperts.com and is the Oncology Chair for the Pharmacy Research Forum at Vanderbilt. She has published on topics such as the pharmacist role in management of oral oncolytics, assessment of infusion related research surrounding pharmacist-based interventions in oncology and mentoring pharmacy residents and students.  

Dr. McCabe is the preceptor for the Outpatient Sarcoma and Melanoma Oncology Rotations.

Dr. Cimino is a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in the Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic. She received her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. She then went on to complete her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice and PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residencies at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. After post-graduate training, she practiced as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Hematology/Oncology at Pennsylvania Hospital prior to joining the Vanderbilt team in March 2020.

Outside of her clinical duties at Vanderbilt, Dr. Cimino is involved with the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association, including serving as Chair of the External/Professional Affairs Committee. Other initiatives include legislating at HOPA Hill Day and working with the Oral Chemotherapy Patient Education as well as the Biosimilars Task Forces. She has published on topics such as novel applications for immunotherapy, new treatments for gastrointestinal malignancies, assessment of drug-drug interactions, and the impact of drug shortages in oncology.

Dr. Cimino is the preceptor for the Outpatient Gastrointestinal Oncology Rotation.

Dr. Hillis is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing in the Renal Cell/Genitourinary Cancer Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in 2019. She then completed her Pharmacy Practice Residency in 2020 and her Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Practice Residency in 2021, both at University of Wisconsin Health.

In addition to patient care responsibilities at Vanderbilt, Dr. Hillis is an active member of the Vizient Cancer Care Committee. Dr. Hillis’s previous research efforts and current interests are focused on optimization of patient adherence and pharmacist-driven supportive care protocols. Dr. Hillis is the preceptor for the Outpatient Renal Cell/Genitourinary Cancer Medical Oncology Rotation.

 

Lindsay Mundy, PharmD, BCOP

Dr. Mundy is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist in the Head and Neck Cancer Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her undergraduate and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Purdue University College of Pharmacy. She previously practiced as a hematology/oncology pharmacist in the Columbus Regional Hospital Cancer Center in southern Indiana, and Indiana University Health Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, IN before she joined the Vanderbilt team in 2020.

Outside of her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Mundy is an active member of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) and National Community Oncology Dispensing Association (NCODA), and she is the Co-Presentation Chair (along with Dr. Hillis) for the PGY2 Oncology Residency program. Her current areas of interest include patient safety, supportive care regimens in patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiation, and incorporating genomics into the evolving landscape of cancer treatment strategies. Her current research project is in the mitigation of infusion reactions.

Dr. Mundy is a preceptor for the Head and Neck Cancer rotation.

Dr. Wilson is a clinical pharmacist practicing in outpatient Adult Medical Oncology and Malignant Hematology at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Cool Springs. She received her Master of Science in Biomolecular Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from Lipscomb University in 2021. She completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown and then went on to complete her PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at Tristar Centennial Medical Center. Dr. Wilson's previous research efforts have focused on supportive care treatments in gynecologic malignancies and graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis in allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. Dr. Wilson is an active member of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) and American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Her practice interests include patient adherence strategies for oral oncolytics and pharmacists' impact in oncology ambulatory care settings.

 

 

Hematology:

Ryan MillerRyan Miller, PharmD, BCOP

Dr. Miller is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing since 2017 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He started in Adult Medical Oncology covering the inpatient unit and transitioned in middle 2018 to Adult Malignant Hematology. He received his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin College of Pharmacy in 2015 and recently completed his Pharmacy Practice and Oncology Pharmacy Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina.

His previous research and areas of interest were focused on the impact of a dedicated pharmacist in the malignant hematology clinic and creating a platform for expanded access of investigational chemotherapy agents. His current areas of interest are opportunistic infection prophylaxis in hematologic malignancies, management of drug-drug interactions with oral targeted chemotherapy in acute leukemia, and standardization of inpatient chemotherapy regimens within the EMR.

Dr. Miller is a preceptor for the Adult Malignant Hematology rotations.
 

Bradley YelvingtonBradley Yelvington, PharmD, BCOP

Dr. Yelvington is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing since 2017 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Adult Malignant Hematology. He received his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2015 and completed residencies in Pharmacy Practice at Greenville Health Systems and in Oncology at Wake Forest Baptist Health. In addition to patient care responsibilities at Vanderbilt, he serves as the malignant hematology pharmacy representative on the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy and Therapeutics subcommittee.

Dr. Yelvington’s past research has focused on therapeutic drug monitoring of busulfan in hematopoietic stem cell transplant and direct oral anticoagulant prescribing practices. Current interests include opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, use of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with hematologic malignancies, and management of drug-drug interactions in HIV-related lymphomas.

Dr. Yelvington is a preceptor for the Adult Malignant Hematology rotations.
 

Katie GatwoodKatie Gatwood, PharmD, BCOP

Dr. Gatwood is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Adult Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy. She received both her undergraduate and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. She then went on to complete both her PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 Oncology residencies at University of North Carolina Health Care in Chapel Hill, NC. After completion of her post-graduate training, Dr. Gatwood began practicing as a Clinical Pharmacist in Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Clinical Pharmacist at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. After 1.5 years in this role, she transitioned to her current position to assist in the expansion of clinical pharmacy services to the outpatient setting.

Outside of her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Gatwood serves as the Program Director for the PGY2 Oncology Residency and as a preceptor in the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program. She also is a lecturer in the oncology module of the Therapeutics course at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy and serves as a preceptor for University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Lipscomb University, Belmont University, and Union University Colleges of Pharmacy. Dr. Gatwood has been an active member of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA), American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) since entering residency training and currently serves on committees in all 3 organizations. She currently serves on the Steering Committee for the ASTCT Pharmacy SIG, is the chair of the HOPA BCOP Oversight Committee, and is the immediate past chair of the ACCP Hematology/Oncology PRN. She also serves on the Pharmacy Committee for the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network. Dr. Gatwood was the recipient of the 2021 ASTCT Pharmacy Special Interest Group New Practitioner Award.

Dr. Gatwood is also passionate about clinical research and education. She has authored several publications and textbook chapters addressing transplant conditioning regimens, late effects of transplant, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, and the impact of oncology pharmacists in ambulatory practice. She has spoken at regional and national conferences on topics ranging from graft-versus-host disease therapies, veno-occlusive disease management, post-transplant maintenance therapy, and use of biosimilars in oncology practice.

Dr. Gatwood is a preceptor for the Adult Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy rotations.

Dr. Orton is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Adult Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from West Virginia University School of Pharmacy in 2019. She then completed both her Pharmacy Practice Residency and Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Practice Residency here at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, after which she transitioned into her current position. Dr. Orton’s previous research efforts have focused on post-transplant DNA methyltransferase inhibitor maintenance for MDS/AML patients.

Dr. Orton is a preceptor for the Adult Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy rotations.

Dr. Proffit is a Board-Certified Oncology Pharmacist practicing in adult malignant hematology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and completed both her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice and PGY2 Hematology/Oncology pharmacy residencies at the University of North Carolina. She practiced as an adult leukemia clinical pharmacy specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY from 2018 to 2022 before joining Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Outside of her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Proffit is an active member of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) and serves as an undergraduate mentor through the University of Tennessee. Her research interests include real-world outcomes in patients with acute and chronic leukemias.

Dr. Proffit is a preceptor for the Adult Malignant Hematology Rotations.

    Dr. Ishee is the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Pharmacist Specialist at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 2016 and subsequently completed her Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at Norton Children's Hospital in 2017. In 2018, she completed her Pediatric Oncology Pharmacy Residency also at Norton Children's Hospital.

    Since being at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Dr. Ishee has become involved in the pediatric residency program and serves as a mentor for pharmacy residents. Aside from the residency program Dr. Ishee conducts research within her interest areas which include supportive care management, infection prevention, and transitions of care. 

    Dr. Ishee is a preceptor for the Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant rotation.

    Dr. Hall is a Board-Certified Pediatric Pharmacist Specialist practicing at Monroe Carell Jr Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her PGY1 and PGY2 residency training at Monroe Carell Jr Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. In addition to patient care responsibilities, she serves as the pediatric oncology pharmacy representative on the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy and Therapeutics subcommittee.

    Dr. Hall is a preceptor for the Pediatric Oncology rotations.

  • Nick Hopkins, PharmD, BCSCP
    Manager, Oncology Operations

    Nick holds a PharmD from West Virginia University.  He began his career working in the community pharmacy setting and transitioned to his first institutional pharmacy role at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2010 where he has served as an oncology pharmacy staff pharmacist and later, as staff supervisor.  Nick currently oversees the operations of multiple pharmacy practice sites, with an oncology focus, including adult and pediatric patients in inpatient and ambulatory settings.  Additionally, Nick serves on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Oncology Pharmacists Association.

    His practice interests include oncology, operations, medication safety, quality improvement, patient experience, and multidisciplinary coordination of care.
    Nick serves as preceptor for the longitudinal staffing experience for the Oncology PGY2 program.

     

    M. Scott Thompson, DPh
    Manager, Oncology Pharmacy Service Line

    Dr. Thompson received a B.S. from Murray State University with a double major in Biology/Chemistry. He received a B.S. in Pharmacy for the University of Kentucky.  He took a position with Vanderbilt after graduation in 1986.  Since taking this position, the majority of his work has been following his passion, Oncology. He rounded with the Pediatric Hem/Onc Service, served as the pharmacy representative in the startup of the solid organ liver transplant program and served on the 18-month Pharmacy Implementation Committee dedicated to redesign of pharmacy work processes. 

    Dr. Thompson was promoted into a leadership role in 2009 and was made Manager of the Oncology Pharmacy Service line in 2010.  In this role, he committed to a separation of Investigational services from standard of care, building a team of a supervisor, two pharmacists and two technicians. He serves on multiple clinical, operational and financial committees.  He is active in quality assurance and med safety committees as well.  He is an active preceptor for four colleges of pharmacy.

    Most recently, Dr. Thompson has been building and expanding the Oncology clinical pharmacist program.  Starting with two clinical pharmacists, the program now has twelve clinical pharmacists.

    Seven are embedded in ambulatory clinics. The rest dedicated to inpatient services. He also, oversees the clinical pharmacist at the off-site breast clinic.  Partnering with VICC, he plans to continue the growth throughout hem/onc and SCT ambulatory clinics, including additional clinical resources throughout the expanding growth of VICC external sites.

    Dr. Thompson serves as preceptor for the longitudinal administration rotation for the Oncology PGY2 program.

    Dr. Peake is a clinical pharmacist in the Oncology Investigational Drug Service at Vanderbilt University Medical Center since 2016.  She received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.  Prior to coming to VUMC she practiced in a variety of settings, including as a Pediatrics Clinical Staff Pharmacist, Drug Information Specialist and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee coordinator.  In addition to patient care responsibilities at Vanderbilt, she serves on the Scientific Review Committee, Clinical Review Implementation Committee, and Data Safety Monitoring Committee.  Dr. Peake works closely with the Clinical Trials Office team to implement new studies at Vanderbilt.

    Dr. Peake is the preceptor for the Oncology Investigational Drug Service and Data Safety Monitoring Committee Longitudinal rotations.
