PGY2 Cardiology

Residency Purpose Statement

The purpose of our PGY2 pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. 

Additionally, the purpose of our PGY2 residency in cardiology pharmacy is to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalist practice to specialized practice that meets the needs of acute care cardiovascular patients.

We are excited to announce that we have early committed Vanderbilt University Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Dr. Amanda Brayemeyer, PharmD for 2024 - 2025 year.

Program Overview

Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers a twelve-month PGY2 residency in cardiology pharmacy that offers comprehensive experience in a variety of cardiovascular practice areas. The purpose of the PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy residency is to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalist practice to specialized practice that meets the needs of cardiovascular patients. Graduates exit equipped to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary cardiovascular care team, and able to make complex pharmacotherapy recommendations in a fast-paced environment. In addition, graduates are experienced in short-term research in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, excel in their ability to teach other health professionals, and possess the experience necessary to exercise leadership for cardiology practice in the health system.

Rotations

* All are 4-week rotations unless otherwise noted. All core rotations are available to be repeated as elective rotations. Any PGY1 rotation is available as an elective.

Hospital Pharmacy Practice

The resident will work in a guided hospital practice scheduled every fourth weekend and on selected holidays. The primary responsibility of the PGY2 resident will be clinical pharmacy practice such as pharmacokinetic consults and clinical dashboard activities. The resident will also participate in the clinical on-call program as either the primary clinical pharmacist on-call or as the back-up clinical pharmacist on-call for PGY1 residents.

Required Projects, Presentations, and Training

Staffing and On-Call Services

• Hospital pharmacy practice is scheduled every 4^th weekend (clinical staffing)
• Staffing or clinical coverage will be required 1 major (2-day combination) and 1 minor holiday
