Residency Purpose Statement
PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.
Program Overview
Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers a twelve-month PGY2 Critical Care residency in which the resident will gain experience in all areas of critical care pharmacotherapy. The purpose of the PGY2 Critical Care pharmacy residency is to develop and refine clinical, leadership, research management, quality assurance, and teaching skills within the practice of critical care. Upon completion of the PGY2 Critical Care pharmacy residency, graduates should be well-prepared to enter clinical practice as a critical care specialist, associate or affiliate clinical faculty member, or to pursue critical care fellowship training.
Training focuses on a full range of disease states, disorders, and procedures, along with the literature behind the medication management of such conditions. Rotations are designed to ensure experience is gained with the highest acuity patients in each sub-specialty area. Clinical knowledge needed to obtain board certification within the practice specialty is provided. Graduates are able to conduct research independently in the critical care environment and should be confident educators in the multidisciplinary and pharmacy training environment.
The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy residency program may offer an early commitment option, and this decision may vary each year depending on the needs of the department.

*Required rotations are 1 month. At least 1 required rotation (other than orientation) must be repeated. |
*Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on the resident interest and preceptor availability. Duration of elective experience is 2-4 weeks. |
*A four week block will be designated as a transitional period dedicated to project time. The resident's schedule is flexible in order to allow the resident to meet his/her career goals and interests.

Hospital Pharmacy Practice
The resident will work in a guided hospital practice scheduled every fourth weekend and on selected holidays. The staffing schedule will include a combination of operational and clinical service responsibilities.
Research Project
The resident will conduct a research project over the course of the residency year. This project will include idea development, literature review, study design, IRB submission, data collection, data analysis, data interpretation, oral presentation and a written manuscript. A pharmacy and physician research mentor will assist in the development and presentation of the project.
