Vanderbilt Radiology Announces $2M Leadership Endowment; New Vanderbilt-ACR Radiology Leadership Institute Scholarship

Nashville, TN—Vanderbilt’s Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is proud to announce a new $2 million endowment for Leadership Development. In creation of this fund, VUMC Radiology will expand its reputation for cultivating innovators by permanently establishing a resource to support our mission for years to come.

“We will use this endowment to develop world class leaders,” says Reed Omary, MD, MS, Carol D. & Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair, Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Vanderbilt University Medical Center & School of Medicine. “Through additional degrees, coursework, or certifications, we will equip Vanderbilt Radiology to address the complex healthcare, societal, and planetary challenges of 2030. Our faculty and trainees will now have departmental support to access the nation’s top leadership training programs.”

VUMC Radiology’s first endeavor with endowment funding will be the launch of a new scholarship that will provide support for VUMC radiologists to participate in a variety of the American College of Radiology’s Radiology Leadership Institute’s (RLI) programs. The RLI offers high impact training to boost leadership and business skills and level-up radiologists’ professional development.

The Vanderbilt-ACR Radiology Leadership Institute Scholarship—available to faculty, fellows, and residents— will send VUMC team members to the annual RLI summit, as well as other RLI programs. These include “RLI Leadership Essentials,” “Kickstart Your Career” and “Maximize Your Influence and Impact.” Participants will be encouraged to share their experience and knowledge through various channels.

“This VUMC scholarship program will enable more radiologists to access unique RLI programming that has already empowered nearly 9,600 radiologists with increasingly-vital skills to accelerate their careers and overcome future challenges,” says William T. Thorwarth, Jr., MD, FACR, CEO of the ACR. “We are excited to see the positive impact that this VUMC commitment to leadership training will have on scholarship recipients, our specialty and the patients we serve.”

Over the last decade, VUMC Radiology has established groundbreaking programs to support career development and build leadership skills among our faculty: from our pioneering Women in Radiology program, to our renowned efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and to our Creative Leadership program for entering faculty. Moving forward, Vanderbilt's ambition is to design the radiology department of the future—and continue to set the model for other top academic radiology departments around the world.
