John Scheel’s Commitment to Planetary Health Highlighted in VUMC Reporter

John Scheel, MD, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Global and Planetary Health, has received some well-deserved recognition for his new appointment within the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences.

The VUMC Reporter shared a profile this week, highlighting Dr. Scheel, the impact he’s made in radiology, and what he plans to do in his newly created sustainability-focused leadership role. After spending the last two decades working with underserved communities and helping to improve health care access, Dr. Scheel aims to address the driving sources of climate change and work with the team at VUMC to fight its effects.

“I spend a lot of time outside the reading room looking for ways to address the upstream social determinants of health,” Scheel says. “The root causes of climate change also impact women’s health, and climate change will exert more pressure on health and care delivery systems.”

As Reed Omary, MD, MS, Carol D. and Henry P. Pendergrass Professor and Chair, explained in the reporter, Dr. Scheel will collaborate with colleagues internally and across the field of radiology to foster sustainable diagnostic programs that further both human and planetary health.
