"Functional MRI of White Matter (?)"
Functional MRI based on the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) effect has been used to map the functional architecture of the brain and assess functional connectivity for almost 30 years. Nearly all previous studies have reported BOLD effects only in cortical grey matter. This presentation will demonstrate that BOLD effects also arise in white matter, suggesting that white matter also shows neural activity that can be detected by MRI.
