Dr. Mack Howell has worked in health care administration for more than 20 years. Mack has recently taken on the responsibility of leading the operational and financial affairs for the Dept. of PM&R in addition to providing leadership to the Dept. of Emergency Medicine and the Dept. of Otolaryngology. He has been at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for 5.5 years. He also teaches as an adjunct faculty member at Lipscomb University in the graduate school of business.

Previously, Mack worked for 10 years at the University of South Alabama, where he oversaw the operations and finances for the Departments’ of Pediatrics and OBGYN. These two departments consisted of more than 40 faculty members, 175 FTE’s and produced more than 40% of all clinic visits, charges, and collections for the entire school of medicine at USA. These two departments grew by more than 70% during Dr. Howell’s tenure.

Prior to working for the University of South Alabama, Mack was the Chief Executive Officer for a not for profit physician practice in Tuscaloosa, Al.

Mack received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from the University of South Alabama, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama and his Doctorate in Education from the University of Alabama in August 2010. Mack’s dissertation was entitled “Academic Medical Faculty and Their Complex Roles."

Mack is an avid college football fan and often yells “Roll Tide” on most Saturdays in the fall.

Mack is married to his wife Melissa (13 years) and they have two children: Gray – 12; Cate – 10.
