Primary Preceptors

Phillip W. Stewart, DPhPhillip W. Stewart, DPh, Residency Program Director

Dr. Stewart received his Doctor of Pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) from University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1980. Dr. Stewart has been a pharmacist starting in 1981 in pediatrics and returned in 1989 with clinical experience in both pediatric and adult pharmacy areas. His more recent clinical pharmacy experience has centered around informatics, where he has helped support all enterprise pharmacy areas and the systems that support care delivery. In addition, he serves as Affiliate Faculty at several colleges of pharmacy and continues to serve as the Residency Program Director for the PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency at Vanderbilt, a role spanning over 10 years. Current roles include evidence-based medicine order sets, precepting PGY1, PGY2, pharmacy students along with Epic Willow duties and responsibilities. Professional interest involved cultivating an increased awareness of the Pharmacy Informatics role among local pharmacy students.

Ed WooEdward Woo, PharmD, Residency Coordinator

Dr. Woo earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Mississippi. He started his career with Walgreens and has held positions as a pharmacist and pharmacy manager. Edward has experience in a variety of pharmacy settings ranging from compounding, medication therapy management (MTM) and specialty pharmacy. Edward joined the pharmacy informatics team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) in 2015 as a Principal Domain Specialist, manager and then Associate Director. As a member of ASHP, Edward has served on various SAB groups, and other ASHP organizational groups. His interest includes data analytics and automation/robotics with areas of research including analysis of opioid use and transitions of care. 

Dr. Woo precepts the Orientation, Ambulatory and Advanced Ambulatory rotations.

 

Wing LiuDr. Wing Liu, PharmD

Dr. Liu completed a PGY2 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Pharmacy Informatics and a PGY1 in Pharmacy Practice at the VA Western New York Healthcare System. He earned his PharmD from the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Liu iis the Director of the Pharmacy Portfolio. In addition to being a preceptor for multiple colleges of pharmacy, he is adjunct faculty within the Lipscomb University Masters of Healthcare Informatics program. His practice interests include clinical decision support, interoperability, data analytics, and leadership, advocacy, and policy for pharmacists in clinical informatics. 

 

 

Fred HargroveDr. Fred Hargrove, DPh

Dr. Hargrove received his Doctor of Pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) from University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in 1983 and has been a pharmacist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center since that time. Practice areas focused on adult critical care and Operative Services. Dr. Hargrove was selected to lead CPOE medication build and pharmacy systems integration in 1992, and later shifted to informatics and pharmacy automation focusing on clinical decision support and operational enhancements. He was manager of the pharmacy informatics team in 2004, and Pharmacy Portfolio manager in 2010. He was Willow Team Lead for Epic implementation and served as Health IT Pharmacy Director from 2015-2018. His current role is Lead Application Architect focusing on medication related issues across the Health IT Clinical Care Group, working with his colleagues and finding solutions to medication related problems and mentoring interns and residents. 

Dr. Hargrove precepts the Clinical Decision Support rotation.

 

David MulherinDr. David Mulherin, PharmD, BCPS

Dr. Mulherin joined the Pharmacy Informatics Health IT team in 2014. Previously he received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2006, followed by a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 2010. After graduation he completed a PGY1 at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis and further received a PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency certificate from the University of Michigan. He was an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy for 3 years prior to joining the Vanderbilt team. Dr. Mulherin has taken on numerous projects including expanded TPN ordering, CDS team lead, multiple BPA alerts and drug interaction features in our clinical systems.

Dr. Mulherin precepts the Advanced Clinical Decision Support rotation. 

 

Michael McGuireDr. Michael McGuire, PharmD

Prior to joining the Pharmacy Informatics Health IT team at VUMC, Dr. McGuire completed a PGY1 residency in pharmacy practice at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS followed by a PGY2 in Pharmacy Informatics at Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy in Nashville, TN. For education he attended the University of Mississippi where he earned his PharmD and BS in Electrical Engineering. His duties with the team range from general file configuration, clinical decision support, pharmacy application security, medication database maintenance, and team support through auxiliary systems.

Dr. McGuire precepts the Technical Concepts rotation and serves as the Mentor for the resident.

 

Joe HueneckeDr. Joseph Huenecke, PharmD

Dr. Huenecke completed a PGY2 at Vanderbilt University in Pharmacy Informatics and a PGY1 in Pharmacy Practice at the University of Toledo. He earned his PharmD from Belmont University College of Pharmacy in Nashville, TN. Following completion of residency training, Dr. Huenecke accepted a position on the Pharmacy Informatics team in Health IT at VUMC. His current practice interests include data analytics, data visualization, system automation design and multi-team solution design.

Dr. Huenecke is a preceptor for Data Analytics and Advanced Data Analytics rotations. 

 

 

Scott NelsonDr. Scott Nelson, PharmD, MS

Dr. Nelson is a pharmacist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Nelson currently works in Medication Safety Informatics, with a focus on medication reconciliation, e-prescribing, and clinical decision support at VUMC. Dr. Nelson's practice and research interests include clinical decision support, knowledge management and engineering, standards and terminologies, health information exchange, information needs, drug-drug interactions, EHR design, CPOE, e-prescribing, medication reconciliation, outcomes research, and cost-effectiveness/economic modeling.   Research Gate Profile

Terry BosenDr. Terry Bosen, PharmD

Dr. Bosen received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1997. She completed a PGY1 ASHP accredited residency in pharmacy practice at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS in 1998. Dr. Bosen continued there as a pharmacist manager of a critical access hospital in Iuka, MS, and then as a clinical consult pharmacist and preceptor in General Medicine in Tupelo. She worked for UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA from 2000 - 2006 as a surgical satellite staff pharmacist and then as the pharmacy supervisor of surgical satellites. In 2006 Dr. Bosen moved to Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a pharmacist and later as a pharmacy supervisor. She serves as Adjunct Faculty to several colleges of Pharmacy. Since 2014 she is the Medication Safety Program Director in the Quality Safety & Risk Prevention department. Dr. Bosen enjoys leading multidisciplinary workgroups and completing process improvement cycles.

Description automatically generatedDr. Matt Marshall, PharmD

Dr. Marshall received a B.S. (Biology), B.A (Mathematics) from Gonzaga University, his Pharm.D. from the University of Colorado, a PGY1 clinical residency at the Zablocki VA in Milwaukee, WI, and completed his PGY2 Informatics residency at Vanderbilt in 2009. He works in the Vanderbilt Department of Pharmaceutical Services and has focused on data analytics, rapid application development, drug supply chain cost-minimizations, and 340B business logic/rules. 

Dr. Marshall co-precepts Advanced Data Analytics rotations.

Description automatically generatedDr. Joseph LeGrand, PharmD, MS

Dr. LeGrand earned his PharmD from Butler University and a Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) from the University of Illinois Chicago. He began his career in retail pharmacy as a pharmacist and pharmacy manager. Joseph joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center  in 2015 as a Principal Domain Specialist for VUMC's custom e-prescribing application at the time. During the VUMC Epic go-live, he helped with the strategy and execution of transitioning legacy Clinical Decision Support (CDS) such as Order Sets, BPAs, and other clinical workflows to Epic. In his current role as Lead Application Analyst, he continues to contribute to CDS analysis, build, and strategy across the organization – as well as developing custom SQL reports and dashboard visualizations. Personally, Joseph dabbles in software development and drug data analysis, and tries to apply this to his rotations if applicable.  Research Gate Profile
