Meet the Chair: Eben Rosenthal, MD

Welcome.

Dr. Eben Rosenthal is a surgeon-scientist and academic leader who has brought extensive leadership experience to Vanderbilt. He was the John and Ann Doerr Medical Director and Associate Director of Clinical Care with Stanford Cancer Center. Prior to his tenure at Stanford, he was division director of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and held the John S. Odess Endowed Chair at the University of Alabama Birmingham. He specializes in the treatment and reconstruction of head and neck cancer. His research interests involve the use of optical imaging techniques to better detect cancer during surgical procedures, and he has initiated multiple clinical trials in improving cancer surgery and assessing drug delivery. A mentor and frequently invited speaker, Rosenthal has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications.

We are committed to an intentional “Taking Care of You” philosophy, our surgeons are nationally and internationally renowned, we provide a huge volume of outpatient and surgical care for patients from all 50 states and many foreign countries, and our outreach efforts span the globe. Our decade-old Residency Leadership Training program has been noted by both the New England Journal of Medicine and the Harvard Business Review. Our teaching methodology emphasizes an active team learning style over traditional lectures. We are proud of our large cohort of residents (25) and our six fellowship training programs (9 fellows). Our culture for training is one of "family," with easy accessibility to our stellar faculty and excellent camaraderie among us all. All of our residents have six months of protected research time. Our research portfolio – embellished by a strong university-wide Discovery ecosystem – puts us in the top two programs for NIH funding. Our PhDs and clinician scientists create a range of investigative programs from image-guided cochlear implants to music cognition to novel COVID-19 investigations. We also invest in a sturdy clinical trial portfolio.
