Sten H. Vermund, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Vermund serves as the Director of the CC SWG, with Drs. Carolyn Wester and Alcendor as Co-Directors. In his role as CC-SWG Director, Dr. Vermund brings a career-long interest in health disparities, 20+ years of HIV research experience in the southeast US, and prevention research management experience explicitly including CC issues from his 13 years in a leadership position of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN; he currently serves on the Executive Committee and chaired the network from 2006-2012). This also includes experience with HPTN 065 (TLC-Plus), an NIH-sponsored CC research partnership with the HPTN, CDC, and Departments of Health of six cities (NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Houston, Miami, and Philadelphia). He also serves on the protocol team of HPTN 071 (PopART), the world’s largest CC study in Zambia and South Africa.38-40 His work has included health department collaborations since his days at Columbia U. in the early 1980s at the very start of the HIV epidemic.
