Lydia Jones, JD

Adjuncy Professor of Law
President, InSage LLC

A pioneer in using internet law and privacy analysis to expand business opportunity, Lydia has worked with high profile corporate, government, and celebrity clients for more than 20 years. Her work enables companies to leverage data as an asset and extends across all digital technologies and platforms—from internet to mobile to e-business. Her work also addresses scenarios in health tech, financial services, retail, education, children’s privacy, and the development of digital and smart technology.

By carefully observing nuance in both business and legal landscapes, Lydia spots opportunities to create business value from the data her clients collect while complying with user privacy rules. Actively monitoring the shifting regulatory landscapes that affect privacy and business decisions enables Lydia to advise clients about how requirements are likely to change over the next several quarters, creating exceptional first-to-market advantage for some companies.

“Monetizing data while providing privacy for users who might be in Ghana one day, Iowa the next, and São Paulo by the end of the week can be a formidable challenge,” Lydia says. “It requires an evolving understanding not only of global trends but also granular analysis about how to configure solid B-to-B relationships and flexible B-to-C policies.”

Before starting InSage, Lydia, a native Bostonian, was an equity partner at Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, a Phoenix-based firm of more than 100 attorneys. There, predating the start of the dot-com era, she launched an internet law and online privacy practice group—one of the first in the U.S—to increase revenue and growth opportunities for Fortune 500 companies and high profile individuals.

Having fully participated in and managed teams in two distinct practice groups—business litigation and commercial transactions—Lydia developed deep pattern recognition of ways to mitigate risks innovatively and monetize products creatively.

During her tenure at Jennings Strouss, Lydia was recognized by Best Lawyers for six consecutive years as one of the Best Lawyers in America in Information Technology.

In 2010, Lydia was tapped to establish the privacy team at SSP Blue, an advisory firm for corporations and governments facing online safety, security, and privacy challenges worldwide. Lydia continues in that role today.

In addition to leading InSage, Lydia is an adjunct professor of law at Vanderbilt Law School, where she teaches Information Privacy Law. Lydia  will also teach Information Privacy Law: Big Data Collection & Use as an adjunct professor of law at Boston University School of Law in the Fall of 2016.
