Laurie Novak, PhD, MHSA

Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics

Laurie Novak, PhD, MHSA, is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics in the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. Her research is in qualitative research and evaluation of the relationship between information systems and work in clinical settings, especially activities related to the design and implementation of large-scale clinical informatics systems. Her current investigations examine communication, coordination and articulation work during sociotechnical transitions. Other areas of interest include the social construction of risk and safety among clinicians and patients, and strategies employed by clinicians to create safety and time during the implementation of new technology. In the biomedical informatics training program, Dr. Novak lectures on organizational studies, methods in qualitative research and economic evaluation.

Dr. Novak received a BA in finance from Murray State University, MHSA in health management and policy from the University of Michigan, and PhD in medical and organizational anthropology from Wayne State University.
