Michael Matheny Featured in HIMSS 21 STAT News Article on Machine Learning

Any digital health conference features its share of machine learning evangelism. Technology executives give fervent testimonials about its power to save lives and money, to predict episodes of severe illness, to help hospitals root out inefficiency.  This year's gathering of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) in Las Vegas was no different. But in between the glowing anecdotes, an aggressive counter narrative emerged: Machine learning needs a watchdog.

Brian J. Douthit, PhD, RN-BC was previously a VA post-doctoral fellow in Medical Informatics & Quality Improvement and MS student in Biomedical informatics. He joined DBMI's primary faculty as Assistant Professor on August 1, 2024. 

He earned his BSN from the Pennsylvania State University, and both his MSN in informatics and PhD from the Duke University School of Nursing. His clinical background includes medical-surgical nursing and palliative care. He also has operational experience as a board certified informatics nurse having worked for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers (UPMC) as an educator and electronic health record (EHR) implementation specialist.

His doctoral work focused on developing and testing multiple measures for data readiness of clinical decision support (CDS) via mobile apps, and continues his research to inform standards to support CDS and the development of metrics and tools to assist in the evaluation of CDS system interactions and outcomes.

The 2021 Vanderbilt Biomedical Informatics Summer Program (VBISP) began on June 1 and ended on August 6, 2021. A total of 14 undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds conducted individual research projects with DBMI faculty as well as group projects to address vaccine literacy.  Throughout the internship, we shared profiles of each student. VCLIC Presents: Intro to eStart Workshop – Sept. 14 from 9 am - 12 pm CT

The Vanderbilt Clinical Informatics Center (VCLIC) is back with its first workshop of this academic year! Please join VCLIC on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 to learn about Epic! This workshop will be co-led by Allison McCoy, PhD, and Aileen Wright, MD, MS. The first half of the course will focus on clinical workflows (led by VCLIC director Adam Wright, PhD), and the second half will focus on CDS and build capabilities in Epic (led by Dr. McCoy).
