Resources for Bioinformatics Training at Home

For those of you who are looking for opportunities to enhance your research programs while at home, VI4 has partnered with the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine to assemble some resources that can be used to enhance your bioinformatic toolbox. The material linked below was assembled by Professors David Rasko and James Kaper at the IGS, and shared with VI4. We hope that you find it useful.

This document here is a primer into Unix and Perl, which are two essential programs for doing bioinformatics.

This is a comprehensive site with bioinformatics tools that starts basic and goes to more advanced topics: bioinformaticsworkbook.org

Here are three courses that are recommended by the IGS:

Here is a list of ten great papers for starting out in computational biology. The IGS recommends papers 1, 4, 6, and 10Ten great papers for biologists starting out in computational biology

Here is a list of current methodologies that is continually updated: A curated list of awesome Bioinformatics libraries and software.

Data Science Support for Microbiome Research

Dr. Nicole Kirchoff provides data science support for VI4 members working on microbiome-related projects. Her expertise includes microbiome study design and microbiome data analysis, helping investigators plan, analyze, and interpret microbial datasets.

Through her work with VI4 and the Vanderbilt Microbiome Innovation Center, Nicole collaborates with investigators across Vanderbilt University and VUMC. She has already assisted with multiple projects spanning pediatric inflammatory bowel disease, preterm neonates, and murine models, contributing to manuscripts and grant applications.

VI4 members can connect with Nicole during her office hours to discuss project ideas, study design, and analysis strategies.
