Welcome to the Trauma Stepdown Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Adult Hospital.
My name is Matthew White, MSN, RN, and I am the Manager of the Trauma Stepdown Unit, located on the 10th floor of our hospital. Known as 10 South (10S), our unit is a critical step in the recovery journey for patients who have experienced traumatic injuries. We are proud to provide exceptional care in a compassionate, collaborative environment where both patients and families feel supported.
On 10 South, we care for adult patients recovering from traumatic injuries involving multiple body systems. While our patients have progressed from the ICU and are considered critically stable, they often require complex medical care and close monitoring. This is a key phase of recovery, and our team is here to help patients regain strength and stability as they prepare for the next step in their care journey.
Our team includes nurses, care partners, physical and occupational therapists, case managers, and many other dedicated professionals who work together to provide individualized care. This multidisciplinary collaboration ensures that patients receive the comprehensive support they need—physically, emotionally, and mentally. We recognize that trauma can be life-changing, and we are here to help patients and their families navigate this challenging time with compassion and expertise.
Our patients are unique because they are dealing with an unplanned event that has a potential impact on their way of life. They are learning to cope not only with their current medical issues but also with their emotional and mental health related to such life-altering events.
For those considering joining our team, 10 South offers a unique opportunity to work with a critically complex patient population while being part of a supportive and dynamic environment. Whether you are a nurse, care partner, or another healthcare professional, you will find opportunities to grow and contribute to meaningful work. We provide a thorough orientation program to help new team members succeed and feel confident in their role.
To our patients and families, we welcome you to 10 South. It is an honor to be part of your care, and we are committed to supporting you every step of the way. Our team is here to answer your questions, address your concerns, and provide the highest standard of care as you move forward in your recovery.
We orient new nurses to our unit by providing an extensive, well-rounded orientation to all new staff.
Thank you for visiting our page. Whether you are a prospective team member or a patient and family member, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve you. Welcome to 10 South!
