Residency Education

The Department of Pediatric Surgery interacts closely with general surgery, pediatric medicine, and all of the surgical specialties. Residents rotate on Pediatric Surgery at PGY 1, PGY 3, and PGY 4 levels. They have the opportunity to encounter a broad spectrum of disorders in the newborn as well as older children. Emphasis is placed on providing the resident with a firm foundation in the fundamental principles of surgical management of children, particularly with regard to congenital malformations, malignancies, injuries, and a large number of common pediatric surgical conditions.

Approximately 3,400 major surgical procedures and 5,500 outpatient visits yearly are managed by the pediatric surgical service. The residents participate with the staff in daily rounds and weekly conferences.

Pediatric Surgical Fellowship

The Vanderbilt Residency Program in Pediatric Surgical Care is founded in the same tradition of rigorous, thorough training that is the heart of our eighty-year history of achievement as an institution dedicated to excellence in research and education for the improvement of patient care. This program is simply one of many steps we are committed to as we strive to match the benefits of specialization to the healthcare needs of pediatric patients.
